Re: interesting vid about how to solder
I've only ever dealt with flux by itself for plumbing. It's a paste in that case. AFAIK, the 'rosin' in rosin core solder is flux so it's built in to the solder you buy. It's applied by the act of soldering itself. Hope this makes sense. I'm a software guy by trade - and an amateur hardware guy and plumber!

Re: interesting vid about how to solder
Here is another video that I found pretty helpful. If you think it is good enough you may want to have BB toss it in with the first post (or if you can) so people will be more likely to see it.

I'm guessing you brush it on before soldering. Is there a timing issue or is 10 seconds before ok? Also is it just a thin layer you put on? I've got 60/40 rosin core solder at the mo. I was thinking of getting the same with flux 2% in the mix. Or seperate flux maybe in the form of a flux pen - but I'm not sure what to get... Any opinions between solder with built in flux or seperate flux and if so what kind? Last edited by sidepartings26; 04-06-2009 at 09:11 PM. |

Re: interesting vid about how to solder
just apply a thin layer over the pot and solder onto it. It'll boil straight away making perfect conditios for the solder to make a great joint.

My other question when soldering to a lug is do you solder the wire onto the edge of the eyelet or do you stick it through the middle and then solder so that a bond sort of 'fills in' between the wire and the eyelet? |

Re: interesting vid about how to solder
Thank you, this is just what I needed to install my new pickup. This is a first time for me and am questioning everything lol. I think I will post up for some info and feedback from others.

Re: interesting vid about how to solder
Eh...just use this stuff....it's the right size, and you don't have to worry about overheating a component while waiting for the solder to melt...it's good stuff..

Re: interesting vid about how to solder
Radio Shack .022 gauge silver bearing solder.
Seriously...until I got into this kind of solder, my jobs looked like hammered dogshit. The stuff is very thin, but it doesn't come off in big gobs once you heat it. It really is worth checking out if you're doing your own pots and caps.

Re: interesting vid about how to solder
My solder joints seem to end up looking shiny with the regular stuff but I might give it a try if I manage to find some....

Re: interesting vid about how to solder
Excellent info!! I only thought I knew how to solder before!
I've been practicing using what I've learned here with excellent results! I should be ready for my new PUP's when they get here next week. BTW the Radio Shack desoldering braid works great for seperating the old connections.

Re: interesting vid about how to solder
Best thread evah...
Except it makes me think I should go take apart everything I have ever soldered and re do it. I knew that mine never looked as good as factory stuff but now I am thinking the mod I did to my amp is eventually going to fail due to my sloppy workman ship. Good thing I saw this stuff before my Wolfetones came in the mail for my LP.
