Thanks for the link. Off to check it out now. Oh, and I like the new Foos single, even though it ventures deep into Tom Petty territory. I'm a Petty fan as well, so I guess that's why I don't mind it so much. As wimpy as it is compared to the rest of the Foos' catalog, it's still way better than most of what passes for rock nowadays. - D

that is, a female singer and a female bass player obviously, the drummer and myself were/are guys - at least i can vouch for the drummer we were not a wanna' be heart or the pretenders, the label did not know what to do with us - except give us studio time to record three songs the label had the attention span of someone with ad/hd who knows what was not, only what was - oh, well as an easy starting point: elvis shook it up for a lot of musicians during his time and then came along the beatles who are still shaking it up for many musicians and then comes along (fill in the blank) –––> nirvana when nirvana came on the radio i would mentally tune out the rest of band so i could listen to the drumming (dave grohl) which i thought was awesome i read somewhere during either the recording of "in utero" or "nevermind" cobain would listen to "revolver" endlessly - apparently, kurt was a big beatles fan - go figure as for dave and his ship of foos in concert - my ears were very pleased and impressed - even the best of bands have their "moments" ("the ballad of john and yoko") the chain remains unbroken - just some of its links are less noticeable than others but contribute in some way "i dont know why fortune smiles on some and lets the rest go free... theres no use in asking why, it just turned out that way" (the sad cafe / the eagles)

But again, maybe I need to give it another listen. Maybe we're not even talking about the same song? I have no idea what the name of it was. |

HOWEVER bearing in mind that those were my introductions to rock, coming from a folk background, and bearing in mind i basically had carte blanch to go back and cherrypick the stuff i liked without declaring allegiances, i love the '80s glam metal scene. it's a really vibrant thing, with (sometimes) less musical talent than a lot of punk or grunge, strangely. i love it all though

Re: How do I get the Dave Grohl sound?
My problem with Nirvana wasn't about how "simple their songs were" Hell, most of my favorite rocks songs are simple as hell-they are still good-
I just never really liked them-Of course, I never liked Bob Dylan either---- ![]() My problem with Nirvana was that the record industry rammed the grunge crap down everybody's throat (like they do all of the next big things) and you couldn't go 25 minutes on the radio without hearing them- Like I said erlier-I am actually getting to where I can listen to them now and when they come on the radio, I do not change the channel--I always use to- |

It's going to be one of two (I think) new tracks on an upcoming greatest hits album. My band sat down and listened to it and we decided it's the drum beat from 'Into The Great Wide Open' and the chords from 'Learning To Fly.' The phrasing of the words and even the melody is pretty close to 'Learning To Fly,' too. - D

So on second listen, I might have been a little harsh in my initial assessment but it's still not really my cup of tea. No biggie. I totally agree with your call on the drums and chords though - which is kind of weird - because those are both songs I'm pretty fond of. |

Re: How do I get the Dave Grohl sound?
random thoughts -
both dave and tom live in encino good guess they know each other socially the ff's have their own recording studio in the valley i do not believe tom re-built his since it burned down maybe tom uses dave's studio analogous to lennon's "you've to hide your love away" and dylan's "fourth time around" you never know, could be an in-joke between friends as that i seriously doubt dave would so blatantly nick from tom, or, weirder still, it could be an homage gezz, as much as i like zep, old pagey had very sticky fingers when it came to other songwriter's material – but it does not detract me from enjoying "whole lotta love" :~)

Re: How do I get the Dave Grohl sound?
Dave uses a Mesa/Boogie Roadking and Vox AC30 for his Amplifiers. When I saw Dave he used primarily Gibson Explorers. A Black one and a White one. Live he has also used a Black Gibson Firebird and also his Semi-Hollow which is a Gibson DG-335. He uses Standard tuning aswell as Drop D and Drop A.
For effects he uses RAT Distortion. For other effects he uses brands such as MXR, EH, Boss and Keeley. Hope this helps... -Sky |
