Hi guys,
I've bought my ESP LTD EC256 in september last year and I really like it, but I'm looking foward to upgrading it so it sounds a bit more like Page's live sound (a '58 Les Paul I think). Ok, that's pretty ambitious, but I'd be happy with anything closer to that. I am probably buying new pickups for it, something like a set of those DiMarzio PAF 36th anniversary, or maybe one in the bridge and a Humbucker from Hell in the neck (had one of these, best pickup I've ever heard, but well, I'm not very experienced, so I'll need a little help here). Although, I'd like to start by the cheapest part, which would be the Pots and Caps, Jack, Switch, I don't know, actually, I know nothing about that kinda thing and that's why I am here! What are the best, cheap upgrades I can do in the eletronics of this guitar? About Caps and Pots, what would they really affect? Which brand should I buy? I'm sorry for so many questions, but I'd really appreciate any help! Thank you very much! |

Re: Eletronic upgrades in a LTD EC256?
I had an EC256 and only upgraded it pickups. I use to have a JB-59' set and it counded really good. All other elecs were stock.
First upgrade I made was change nut for a tusq one, stock was crap! Bridge was not so good eather but never change it. Nice guitar, really like body shape on those. Mine has a little finish defective neck and sold it. GReetings

Re: Eletronic upgrades in a LTD EC256?
Yea, indeed it is quite a nice guitar and it is relatively cheap too!
About that, since I've bought it, I've been thinking about the nut, in both of my guitars actually, the LP is a little better, but the tele sounds very plasticy when unplugged (even though it is a so-cal Squier Classic Vibe). Is there anyway I could change the nut myself? I have no experience in that sort of thing, actually I've messed up my guitars many times trying to fix their truss rods and string height. What are the effects of the nut material in the tone? |

You can gut it until the cows come home and never approximate the tone you are after.
Do you sound like page when you play unplugged? THAT will determine what you sound like, no matter what pickups etc. Fiddle with amp knobs or the tone knob on the guitar before you play dress up. |

Re: Eletronic upgrades in a LTD EC256?
Yeah, of course, the player does make a lot of his tone, but not all of it, and there is no way anyone could help me with that, so that's why I'm seeking for help about technical guitar stuff.

Re: Eletronic upgrades in a LTD EC256?
A lot of import guitars sound a bit muddy due to the stock electronics. Better pots, caps & 50's wiring will help get rid of that. Page had a fairly bright tone with a lot of his LP's, probably so he could cut through the Bass and Drums. Quite a bit of info here if you want to do your own upgrades Wiring Library

Re: Eletronic upgrades in a LTD EC256?
I specifically can't talk about any products that I offer outside the vendor section, but CTS makes some nice 10% 550K pots, and .022 uf is the common value for LP caps.
