Humbuckers r9

Hello guys,

2 Weeks ago i bought a new R9 ice tea. Nice guitar and amazing playability.
But the sound of the Burstbuckers was bad. Too harsh (fizzy) in the highs and muddy lows. I swapped them out and put 57 classics in. (not the +)That was way better, but still a too dark.
I have also a R7 Goldtop. That guitar sounds just amazing. A lot better then my R9. The R9 sounds too bassy. (too much bass)
I've read a lot on this forum here and have seen that many R9 players have Seymour Duncan Antiquity humbuckers or Troback Humbuckers. Read also good things about the Bareknuckles.

What you guys can suggest me?

Best regards,

Peter Deflem

Re: Humbuckers r9

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on the new (gorgeous!) guitar!

There is a Pickups Sub-Forum in which you would get some great replies. But we need to know what kind of music you play, through what kind of amp, and what you're trying to accomplish musically. There is an overwhelming amount of choices out there, and we have quite a few respected pickup-winders in the forum as well.

A good set of PAF-style pickups would get yuo there, no doubt. The only ''problem'' is that there are MANY winders that could provide you with one.

Take a listen to the samples in this thread:

My Last PAF (CLONE) "SHOOT-OUT"

Listen closely and see what you like / if you can hear differences, etc. I don't think you can go wrong with either winder.

Bareknuckles are not included in the shoot-out, yet everyone regards them very, very highly.

good luck deciding.

Re: Humbuckers r9

That clone shootout was a great thread....most of them sound really similar (to my ears), but the prices are quite varied. Its a tribute to the winders that the real PAF in the shootout actually sounds a little flat compared with a lot of the clones.

Might be a good idea to contact a winder here because it looks like you got some specific things in mind. I am sure that any winder here can make you a nice set if you gave them the infos above and a little more.

Re: Humbuckers r9

There is a massive myriad of choices that can be made in the humbucker world, especially for PAF types. You need to do a whole lot of research and just try to narrow down your options. You may be able to better figure out and describe what you want from your pups.

Re: Humbuckers r9

After a while i did some upgrades about my Les Paul R9. I ordered the harness from jonesy and put Bareknuckles Mules in the guitar. (also tried the 57 classic's but... way to harsch for THIS guitar)
The harness (50's style wiring) have .015 and .022 oil-filled caps (Vitamin Q) and 550K pots. Unbelievable what a sound i have now! REALLY happy with my R9!!!
Transparant, articulated well-balanced tone. (Bonamassa tone...)
Could not understand that Gibson delivers a R9 with modern wiring.
The pots works great and delivers a much better sound!

Thanks all for your help!

Re: Humbuckers r9

Great to hear! When I first opened this thread, I was going to suggest a pot and cap change but, of course, you're already there! I don't understand some of the things that Gibson does, either, but I guess it is what it is.

50's wiring bud. That is the only fix to your "bassy" problem in this case. You'll lose the mud, and gain all the dynamic clarity in the world after that. I've got BB pros in my LP and after wiring it 50's style, I sound like Jimmy Page.

From one winder to you. Electric City pickups. Bill is an amzing winder and won the shoot out.

DC DOES NOT EQUAL OUTPUT. Dc is a resistance value and that is all. It WILL NOT tell you what it will sound like, it WILL NOT make you sound like another player.

Re: Humbuckers r9

Did another test. When the harness from Jonesy arrived, i've changed also the humbuckers (Mules) at the same time.
After a while, I was just curious how the original Burstbuckers sound with the harness from Jonesy.
So, couple days ago i swapped the Mules out of the guitar and put the Burstbuckers again in the R9.

Yes i'm pretty crazy....but...

The guitar sounded a lot better! I couldn't believe my ears! Less hot than the Mules but so clear and articulated. Great basses, not muddy at all.
Is this guitar playing with me or am i playing the guitar?
So the caps and the pots are THE trick! It's unbelievable...
Learned a lot on this forum.
Again... JONESY is the man!

Love that guitar more and more!

Greets,

Peter
