Effects loop question

OK, this may have already been asked before so I’ll just apologize ahead of time in case it was.

I have an older 2-chanel MESA DC-5 that does not have a lead boost. I’ve been using Smart People Factory transparent volume boost pedal towards the end of my signal chain in front of the amp. Question is; are volume boost pedals more effective in the effects send? The amps not at my house so I haven’t had the chance to try it out. Anyone have a good understanding of what effects are better placed in an effect loop? Thanks.

I've never tried a volume boost in the loop, but from my experience modulation effects seem to work best (chorus/flanger/phaser/delay/reverb).

+1

Time delay or modulation work best in FX loop. Dont put boosters, dirt, distortion, wah, will sound realy bad in the FX loop. Run those in the front.

I have read that some pro players put an MXR micro amp boost pedal in the loop.Consequently, I have tried it myself with success.
PS its one of the few non modulation pedals you can put in the loop aswell as a vol. pedal.I'm not sure if its the case with all amp loops but the one in my fender twin amp can be set purely as a boost by adjusting the send and return levels.

Re: Effects loop question

I used to use a DOD Bifet preamp pedal in the loops of my amps. I placed it last, behind the modulation, delay, and reverb pedals so as not to overload those pedals. Worked like a champ. Somewhere along the line, I switched from solo boosting to rhythm cutting. At first I used the Ernie Ball 25k volume pedal in the loop which gave me rhythm cutting as well as volume swells (25k because my loops run at line level). I finally ended up making myself a rythm cut pedal, with a 25k pot to set the rhythm volume.

Here's my current one. The knob on the side controls the rhythm volume. Parts cost: $17
