You know it's been so long but I remember V1 is a Bugle Boy, V2 Mullard, and V3 I couldn't tell you for the life of me. Thanks for the compliments.

Re: Beano Tone?

That sounds awesome! I think that pretty much settles the "did Clapton use a Rangemaster" debate. That's as close as I've ever heard anyone get and certainly much closer than any Les Paul>Rangemaster>Marshall clip I've ever heard.

Re: Beano Tone?

Yep, the treble booster on Beano is debatable. There are a few parts that may resemble that sound, but he had that amp set with everything on ten, so a twist of a volume knob, with the tone knob on ten, could have a similar effect. I have read interviews with some of the people involved with that recording, and they all say there was no pedal, even Clapton said there was no pedal.

Curious is your 1967 Marshall a 20w or 25w?
Frank,
What mics and positions on the speaker/cab did you use?

thanks,

Re: Beano Tone?

Royer 121 center cone, close in, Avantone CV-12 center cone 12" back, Sennheiser e609 edge of cone, close in. I'll be honest, I don't know sh#t (I gave up swearing for lent) as far as recording goes. I just give it a semi-educated guess on the mic position. I turn the mics preamp gain all the way up, and isolate the microphones output. With headphones on I listen to the amps hiss through the mic and fine tune from there. My assumption is the louder the hiss the closer to the sweet spot for finding the speakers high's, then I know the edge of the cone gives more mids.

Can't go wrong using your ears..... I think you did a great job. The tone is thick, clear, up front and natural. Of course, you had some nice gear to start with.

I like your "isolate the hiss" technique.

thanks,

Re: Beano Tone?

Aside from that one guys demanding banter and criticism, I love hearing MLP members playing! I don't give a crap if it was Beano, Bonno, or Blo Blo = Green Jacket, Gold Jacket, Who gives a s@#t! You both sounded great and keep posting clips. Some of us on here type too much and don't play enough . I might have very lame gigs 2 times a week but at least I am consistently improving my tone and staying active........ get paid and drinks are free!!!!!!!!!! I would play for a crowd of 0
Quill, homenote, mdubya and 1 others like this.

Re: Beano Tone?

BTW: I have no shame. I am a small bar, backing track jammer with a great sax player at the moment (actually having more fun than playing with a band you don't like). We play all over from fancy Martini bars to Hispanic Flea Markets. You guys making videos sound kick ass and don't need to bother with the "I used to play all of the time elitist dreamers." Wow sorry for my tone I am usually much nicer than this.

Re: Beano Tone?

I wish I could find a band to jam with. Small gigs or no gigs. I would still enjoy it very much. I love blues and old British based blues. It's hard to find guys interested in just that genre.

Oh yeah. Beautiful.

{edit} Oooo I wrote that before I saw the picture of the amp and now I've seen the picture, ooo what a dreamy rig that is. Fantastic - who doesn't love those old Mark II's? Hm? Nobody doesn't love 'em, that's who.

Nice to know a fellow Hoosier! I play mostly downtown Indy. Every Saturday I play at Sushi on the Rocks, I play at Adobo, Blu Ultra Lounge, ICE, Kilroy's, Pearl Street, Oceanaire, and a few of the hotels. As mentioned before, I used to play at this Hispanic Fleamarket for like 6 hours at a time every Sunday. It was rowdy and probably one of my favorite places ever. They had some trouble and it went out of business. Damn I miss that place. I have never made it to play in Terre Heute but have a bunch of buddies from Rose U. We will have to meet up sometime. I played 14 days straight all over for the whole Super Bowl madness. My apartment is on the strip on Meridian and was literally in Super Bowl Village. I wish I got you sooner so we could have hooked up and jammed......the Playboy party was nuts! I lucked out so bad to open up that party

Re: Beano Tone?

Those clips sound awesome. I have a Metro JTM Bluesbreaker combo loaded with Scumnico speakers. To me, the "Beano" tone is what started it all. My 2nd-favorite tone of all-time. If I may add my 2 cents, I also agree there was no treble booster. My amp sounds best cranked through an attenuator, with the bass rolled back a bit.
