I was always the opposite. The LP has got all these pots and a switch: it seemed to me I had to learn it. It also seemed to me I could hear Mick Taylor and Jimmy Page changing pick ups and volume settings in the middle of tracks, so I thought I'd have to learn how to do that, too.

Didn't know diddly about pot impedance (no, the twiddly things in the guitar, not the effect of herbal jazz cigarettes) until I started reading up on it online. Whole world of difference right there.

But I've played riding the volume and tone since the late 1980s.

Here is my take on Gibson the company, some assert that Gibson makes good stuff and people know it........ well when you are viewed as the "Holy Grail" you can sell anything to anyone and they will suck it up without question.

Actually most people only "know" what they've heard from others, fact is Gibson rests on the laurels of the past and is milking a cash cow named Nostalgia and really hammering collectors (some of whom have more money than sense), while in reality the current company has done nothing to deserve the rabid following, lying by ommission of certain critical details is still dishonest, if you change any thing (formula of the Nitro, lie about Bees) it is not a vintage reissue it is simply another copy of the real thing.

The fact that they can get close to vintage specs now means they intentionally sold a fraud to the public in the 70's and 80's just calling it a Les Paul and people bought them because the guitar heros of the day were playing real Bursts that sort of looked like what was available.

Re: Gibson can be a bit naughty sometimes...tut-tut

Yea, I must admit I was a little shocked at reading these posts. I have been playing for 25+ years and have owned many guitars/amps/pedals to try and find "that sound". I started on 60's Strats as a kid and owned many Fender products, as I got into my 30's my brain got rewired to the Gibson sound and I've never left. I will always own a Les Paul.. I've tryed many other brands and I've never been happy with anything else, even Fender now I won't play.

I just feel the Les Paul as an extension on my soul, it does what I want it to do and I find its the best instrument of my expression. I own a '07 Standard with chambering and I still love it. I've played 70's Customs, Deluxes and Standards and still find that it really depends upon the individual guitar.

Gibson right now is like Harley going through its owned by AMC phase, they will eventually feel the pinch by producing mediocre guitars, and I hope someone who really respects the heratige of Gibson ends up making the calls on how they are produced. They still pump out that odd jem that just comes together nicely from time to time and people will still buy them. As far as the VOS Gibbys go, I'd rather just buy a bone stock standard at a nominal price than sell the farm to buy what I think is the "Holy Grail" of tone only to clue in that its just a replica after all.

Technically speaking, isn't that fraud?
