Tone Pot

If one of the lugs has broken off the tone pot, as long as nothing is wired to that lug will the pot still work?

Re: Tone Pot

I wired it to have Modern Independent volumes, then thought I would give 50's style Independent volumes a go, and fucked the pot!!!!!
I've put it back MIV, but the tone pot to my ear doesn't seem make any difference?
If the tone pot was broke completely would I get any sound or would the tone just not work, or is it because the Caps are shit? I waiting for some Vitamin Q's coming my way.

Cheers in advance for any help!!

Is that pot earthed/grounded? ie. Lug soldered to pot casing?

You should still get sound if the tone pot is broken. I burned out 2 pots with over exuberant soldering. Whilst I was waiting for new ones I fitted the 2 burnt ones for aesthetics so I coud fit the knobs. They were unconnected and I still got sound. In that situation, i think its like having the tone permanently at 10. Better caps will help, I went for sprague orange drops for a couple of quid and they are miles better than the stock Epi ones. So Q's should be a marked improvement.

If you do need a replacement pot(s) for the tone, I recently got CTS linear pots from allparts uk and they are great.

yep they don't seem to have the linear taper in the long thread pattern. They do have the audio taper though

ONLINE SHOP | ALLPARTS GUITAR & AMP PARTS | Electronics | 500K pots | 500K audio pot CTS split knurled shaft w 3/4 inch long threaded bushing

To be honest, I'm not sure how different the effect of using linear taper is. My guitar and my brother in law's both have the same pickups, caps, and are wired 50's style. He used CTS audio taper for all 4 controls, whereas I used 2 audio and 2 linear. To my ears, I don't hear any disernible difference.

Re: Tone Pot

you could fix that as long as there is some metal left from the lug at all on the other side, just solder a wire to whats left and then solder that to the back of the pot

Does having that earthing plate make the wiring process any easier?

Re: Tone Pot

I wired mine outside of the guitar. my parts came in a box, so I just made holes in the box and put the pots on top of the box, then wired. Once I had everything wired up, I dropped the pots in, and connected the ground.

I put a new pot in the end, and no the earthing plate is a pain in the arse!
Because to change one pot I had to take them all out of the guitar recess as they are all attached to it!!

thanks for all your help guys!!
