Randy Rhoads

How do I get a proper Randy Rhoads sound with my setup?
I have an Epi Les Paul Standard, Gibson Faded SG, Shecter Damien FR, Marshall Valvestate Halfstack, Marshall Guv'nor OD, Danelectro Wasabi OD, Dunlop Wah, MXR Delay, and Digitech Grunge. Any help is appreciated. Thank you everyone!

Re: Randy Rhoads

I am a HUGE Randy Rhoads fan and I'm getting a Line 6 Spider 3 Amp and I think it has a Randy Rhoads setting on it. So if you are looking for a new amp go chase after the Line 6 Spider 3.

Nailed right there!:

YouTube - Doug Aldrich demostration with Marshall 1959RR @ NAMM '08

Sounds like a ton of bass dialed in.

I really like Randy's tone and playing!

Good luck on finding your tone!

yes, but I don't have $4500 to drop on an amp. I have about $300 to spend on pedals and pickups. And thank you!

Termanator7: I am just going to ignore that. I have the 15 watt and it is flat out horrible. no offense.

Try to find a used Line 6 POD and some headphones. Work up from there. If you don't pay too much for the POD you can break even on it when you decide on an amp and effect(s). The POD will let you try just about every variable in the equation except for pickups - even speaker cabinets. Just models, not the real things - but most of the models are pretty accurate (IMO), and will at least get you in the right neighborhoods.

Thanks, but I want to keep it all analog.

I understand. Most if not all of the models are of analog devices. I'm just proposing it as a way of narrowing the field based on your own impressions instead of ours.

Thanks so much. I was just thinking what OD's/Distortions will sound the closest.

Re: Randy Rhoads

I had a quick look at the NAMM vid, and to get anywhere near that sound you will need a closed cabinet. A 4 x 12, or something similar. A bit like your Valvestate head and cab, really.

No open-backed combo by itself will quite nail it. You might get it with a Mesa and an extension cab, for example, but to get his bass response at volume you need a closed cab.

As far as gain is concerned, your preamp and Guvnor should do it. You will then need to tweak your EQ and and be ready to ride your volume control.

cheers,
Splat

Thank you! Very helpful! Yes I have a closed cab. I also have the EQ: Bass Slightly Scooped (4), Mid Boosted (7), Treble about even (5-6).

FYI its an MG412.
