can you get with any of the setting something similar to the regular Tele neck tone?

Yeah somewhat, I think when the Tone choke is on it makes that bridge pu sound more open and glassy, maybe a little like a Tele neck or even a Strat?

Listen to this Video with clean clips, I kinda like the "open & jangly" Tones at 2:03 and 2:40 much smoother and warmer sounding than a normal single coil bridge pu.

Cool stuff Jonesy!

did you take any measurements of the inductor (choke)?

like inductance, resistance?

I think the one in the Gibson Varitone is a 1.5H, 4k Ohms.

Thanks Indy!

It measures about 3.89K ohms, my meter does not measure inductance but spec sheet for this choke coil says 150 henries.

The only thing if I had one of those is that I'd miss the middle tele tone... any ideas???

I think he has it wired to a push-pull so he can use it at will.

Well deserved IMO, you are always chasing Tone. Just look what went into your "Pint O Stout" LP

I love an Esquire even with just the bridge pu, volume and tone, but I also like all the traditional Tele tones that you get from the neck and bridge. There are several ways to install this type of wiring in a variety of guitars, depends what you wanna do with it I guess. It's basically 60 year old technology, nothing new really

Re: Tone choke and notch filter in an Esquire Pics

That sounds great!

I've been toying with the idea of building a fat necked Tele/Esquire. This would absolutely be what I'd want for the electronics. Probably not going to actually happen (I can barely solder, much less put together a guitar), but if I ever gut my G&L or grab another Tele, you and Zhang are on my list.

love the #3 position on the Big D Varitone

very classy - and the Fenderish volume knob works well

looks and sounds like a winner :~)

Thanks Ray, I think #3 was one of the ones I liked a lot as well.

I installed that Witch-hat knob for a little extra Mojo

150 henries? Wow, I thought maybe I had an inductor laying around that would do the trick, but nothing that high.

Re: Tone choke and notch filter in an Esquire Pics

sir, this is very cool. thank you for sharing the results of your experiment. i like how you separated the choke from the varitone circut. and shared the cap values that worked best for you. this is definetly going to be a project for me very soon. i like this. i have a varitone pedal and like using it often,no batteries. since it is a plug in device, i can use it with any guitar. and also use the tone control on the guitar as well as the varitone, to get very dark hollow sounds. very cool, thank you

I use this Esquire a lot for open tuning and slide work and this set-up will let me get a huge variety of Tones out of one pu. The rotatory has 3 fixed wah setting s and woman Tone setting as well as a bypass. I have the Tone choke wired up so it cut's out the lows and some of the mids and between that and the rotary there are lot's of interesting Tones.

Haven't had any time to make a video or sound clips but I hope to soon.

Hi, Jonesy,

i can not see a pic of the wiring in the Esquire!!
can you please email me that diagram

thanks

Re: Tone choke and notch filter in an Esquire Pics

How does the Tone Choke work?

Is it a single copper coil? Like a regular choke?

I am willing to stick one in project, as they are quite cheap.
Unfortunately, the exact function is a mystery to me.
