Duh, yea. I see the finish! Beautiful! I don't drink much at least... Actually, it's been weeks since I had a drink. We do have our drunks around though, like everywhere else...

Re: Devil's workshop

Mouse, my friend who made me rethink the whole concept of this industry. Got me hooked on playing music for music' sake and steered my attention to the "right causes" in music. Considered as a no.1 pickup winder in our country, with a customer list ranging from anonymous guitar slingers, to "hot shots".

Being a guitar player before a luthier gives him a head start in creating and recreating some of the finest goodies available to our discerning ears.

I have had the pleasure of cuddling with this baby recently (the Lester we are all drooling on), and boy, it rings.
Very acoustic and very light. If it had a bridge, I'm sure it would be louder than some acoustics 8-)

Can't wait for the witch to bring this girl alive!

Re: Devil's workshop

Frankly, nothing worse sounding than 100W Marshall with volume 2 and presence on 0 lets face it, it's dead. And now stop toying with it and dial vol. 6-7 and presence about halfway, let it sing and show that treble. Shoot neighbours if necessary, man's gotta know his priorities

Let's continue with a wish foundation. I've just heard 'Can't you see' by Marshall Tucker Band on radio and love Toy Caldwell's thumb playing.

Re: Devil's workshop

Hoyla guys and girls,
it seems that my w(h)ish foundation is over cause new baby is born, be carefull what you wish for
Now I'm probably dead with my previous tonematching BS cause I have recording of newborn's weep for you to hear. I hope that tone is coming through my hack playing, it's been a month since I've played damn thing and so I'm pretty off the rhythm and that's a fact LoL
I can repair things with some rites, which of course will follow, but for now I got this
tell me what you think

But before that I'll take her at one high energy place to perform some rites

Re: Devil's workshop

Testing Lester

Distorted soundclip. instead of killing whole neighbourhood and in lack of some attenuation I've used pedals. Not so open sound but the heck worse than using isolation box, not so good LoL
First thing heard thru (wrongly played) ZZ top riff is stock 80's tube screamer and after that my homemade Hexenkreis.Later is idea of distortion pedal with baxandall active tone control which actuall boosts low midds or treble. We can say that TS is more classic rock type of frequencies and Hexe is more midscoop centered. Again waiting (always waiting for something ) for casing and new small pots for Hexe, right now is in my testing project box.

ZZ sot

Thanks gtr-tek!
It's been fun to build this guitar and eventually she ended as a nice fiddle but story is just about to begin.
Stay tuned for more witchcraft

Re: Devil's workshop

Guys, final rites are not done yet but this fiddle is becoming very alive as far as I can say.
Amp was my Marsh18Watt replica and sound is maybe a little bit on the rough side for this riff. I gave pills to my neighbours to calm down and cotton for ears too. So I recorded two minutes on H2 Zoom recorder live as it is with no modifications or aditives in post production. I just cutted off bad parts because I care for your hearing LoL.
This is also chance to hear my unpotted PAFs in action, so comment freely I need feedback.

You are welcome mdubya bro
@ gtr-tek, well I'm trying to gather a gang for ritual, it will be fun maybe a little scary too. Nothing without ritual otherwise it could become bedroom guitar and that would be no good at all.

I've been working a little too, acid apples for snowhite LOL

Re: Devil's workshop

Thanks Jonesy, today's topic will be a little about output transformers.

Making of the RadioSpares/Partridge style OT 3.5K El34

This tone chasing thing is never ending story.when you think you got it enough, an idle mind which is devil's workshop... is already up and playing with transformers design ahh.
Drake 784 139 have myth status among collectors and players but I have decided after listening to 1963 JTM 45 with RadioSpares output transformer to try other winding pattern than simple Drake piece of cake interlieving.
So I have around same numbers like Drake but will do a heavy early hifi Radiospares/Partridge style interleaving and see how it would behave in the circuit, I hope not ampli fire LOL
I opted for slightly thicker secondary and almost got problem getting out of the window, that would be a real pity cause I guided wire by hand from the air without any aid,I used machine to turn the damn thing but it was 8 hours job.
I've heard that RadioSpares OT have more open character with plenty of harmonics which was my target and after I found suitable old audio Iron which had Drake size project started to roll ...

Re: Devil's workshop

Well after winding & all technical mess it would be shame not to put this tranny into good amp and fire it up!
But wait, tone results without reference have no validity so I opted for a good reference which would be healthy JTM50 from 1967.
I will put the new output tranny in my 1971 JMP50, ok I know the circuits are not the same but nobody's perfect!
Right away before the recording of the clips we have noticed that this RS style have harmonic complexity even when presence on zero...so standard presence dial 5-7 on marshall scale was unnecessary and rarely above 3 in this recording while '67 presence was around 7.

Keep in mind that new tranny is still virgin, it would be needed around 100 hours to brake in.
Clips are recorded with Strat /SSS/ through fender box loaded with vintage Fane ceramic 2x12".
We found this box better suited to hear small differencies than 4x12 with blackbacks which gave out tough SPL
We didn't use pedals just cable, no channel bridging just bright ch.
