Re: Devil's workshop
here is testing of the new amp. friend of mine have a rehearsal room with an oscilloscope and other nice things at his work (Ericsson Nikola Tesla corp.)
we had some minor problems with amp, it was little fuzzy when maxed. after inspection we found that 'hi cut' control potentiometer (new one) is causing the trouble so we replaced it with new one. cut control is part of the post phase inverter master control (ppimv) in this style of amp which is voxish ef86 preamp with ala matchless 6pole position voice dial or notch and marshally type phase inverter/power amp. ef86 has distinctive harmonic quality once the 'knee' is dialed nicely and marshall output certainly color the behavior of the amp causing the 4xel84 to drive snot out of them. amp is cathode biased, here is some doodling. recorder is zoom h2, lesliepaul straight into amp. |

Re: Devil's workshop
The wiring is very neat and nicely done! I love it. This is boutique style!
The sound is quite amazing, I have to say. I also recognize some Peter G., wow this EF86 sounds really good. You managed to get the best out of a EF86, respect! The transformers are really big, I can only imagine how incredible this sounds live! Very good work! |

Re: Devil's workshop
Thanks amigo!
Yeah big iron, output trafo is suitable for Hiwatt 50 watt and it's done Partridge style, very complex interleaving, winded on the old 70's audio iron. clip is recorded with single 12" G12H 30W celestion anniversary so even more air is expected with 2x12" format (G12H30 Heritage 55Hz and Alnico Gold) Output transformer is obviously capable to feed well these boys

Re: Devil's workshop
Backplate installed.
Four el84 and GZ34 are near the edge of the back aprox. 1cm /half inch and it gets pretty hot so I decided to go with minimalistic design.

Re: Devil's workshop
It is hard to record it in a small room.. problems just like with ac30. Two 100dB speakers/huge harmonic content/ are pumping 100dB against walls etc. The 'thing' is perfect vox/marshall marriage. very intuitive, synergetic amp by design

Re: Devil's workshop
That is a fine sounding amp! It does the clean/dirty quite well and has the notches in the right places!

Re: Devil's workshop
Freakn' fantastic, man.
Mouse - are those real Piher resistors on that board? And honest-to-goodness Mustard caps? If they are - where on God's green earth did you ever find those? / I don't really expect you to reveal your source, if I'm really looking at what I think I'm looking at - just, I dunno, expressing my astonishment and admiration. And really - the work, the beautiful design - that is the beauty of it, who cares about a few rare parts, even if they are exactly the right rare parts ... !!!

Genuine nos mustards, some allen bradley resistors and iskra and some new. I had some from previous builds, mostly locally or ebay hunt. it's not that crucial for the tone itself as I learned from previous builds, transformers, voltages, speakers and overall tuning of the amp is far more important. as resistor goes i like them to be resistive, all other is audiophools territory

Re: Devil's workshop
Hah hah! Well, that's good to hear - I am inclined to trust your ears and experience on these matters. I'm embarking on a build of my own and, being a bit of a phool, am easily convinced I have to go to extremes to get stuff I maybe don't need.
Still, those old parts sure are pretty, aren't they? And framed in a beautiful build like that, they just glimmer like jewels. Yes? You agree, I know you do. But I think I'm most impressed by the transformers. The heart and soul of the amp, no doubt!
