Pot replacement

Ok, I have decided to replace my wiring in my Epi LP. I have 4 conductor wire pickups so I was thinking I would get 2 push pull pots as well. I was thinking a whole rewire. Toggle, input jack, pots, wires, caps. What is the best thing to use and where is the best place to get it?

Re: Pot replacement

I've never gone looking for push pull pots but RS would be the first place I'd look. They have everything else you mention.rsguitarworks.net - Home

I don't know if the parts differ that much, but the site Ninja gave has cheaper prices. The regular pots were about $.50 different, but the push pulls were almost half price compared to RS. But then I have to wonder about quality as well.

Re: Pot replacement

The member Jonesy has a nice prewired Jimmy Page unit at his site ToneMojo.com Got your Tone-Mojo Working Baby? - I would be going with that if I had two-wire pickups.

Re: Pot replacement

I just got my shipment today. I got 4 new 500k pots.

2 Linear taper(for tone)
2 Audio taper(for volume)

I also got 2 good Orange drop caps(.022mfd). Those were real big, compared to the stock ones. I wasn't sure how they would sound. I wanted a little brighter tone. I replaced everything with the stock ratings, and figured I would see how it sounded, before I changed to 1meg pots. Good thing I did. 1meg pots would be to harsh I think. They made a big difference. It is a lot more brighter and my tone and vol knobs react different now, in a good way.

I finisher her off with a set of Cream speed knobs. They look real good. They go with the binding, pickup rings and switch knob/washer, which are all Cream.

The one thing I did not like, and ppl have said this to me before, I had to enlarge the holes in the body for the new pots. The shaft diameter was bigger on the new pots. I don't know if Epi uses cheap stuff, but the stock pot diameter was small, the stock pots did say Epiphone on them. So I carefully ran a drill through to enlarge the holes.

All turned out well. It looks real good, and sounds like I took a blanket off my amp.

***EDIT I have heard good things about CTS pots, as far as quality goes. Those were the ones I went with.

I don't understand why he has 4 push pull pots. Hmmm. I have 4 wire pickups, so I will do my own wiring.

I haven't cleaned it yet after the upgrade so don't mind the fingerprints. Let me know what you think.

Re: Pot replacement

That looks great. Nice soldering job. I went dark on mine, but the light looks cool too. Anything different than those amber knobs is an upgrade!

Re: Pot replacement

Good job on the rewire - looks like there is a quick-release point in there.

The four push/pull pots are: 2 coil taps, 1 series/parallel and 1 for phase. I am prone to making mistakes, so for me personally, a prewired unit is best - minimum soldering on my part.

Unfortunately, my pickups are of the single wire variety and I like them (BB Pros), so even though I want to do this type of wiring I am unable to without getting new pickups.

Re: Pot replacement

I like to do stuff on my own, so I will probably go with individual components. His quick release point is stock wiring. He only changed his pots and caps, he did not change the wiring. The plastic connector comes stock in the Epi now. Not sure why its there. I am going to rip out all the wiring in mine when I redo it and start over. It's more fun that way. change the toggle, pots, caps, wires, input jack. Everything.

Re: Pot replacement

Ya that connector comes on the switch harness. I figured I would leave it. It will make it easier the next time I take it apart.

After reading this I have decided to go with loose components as well. I just ordered the set from RS and will have to do all the soldering myself - with the exception of the prewired switch. It was a lot less expensive that way too... I am already nervous about it though, mostly over where the ground wires are supposed to go as I want to rip out everything and get that old style look. I will be sure to post pics of my 'adventure' with this also.

The ground makes a loop basically. It's not hard at all, just don't burn your pots.
