So I know all about Fenders history. In the '50s you could get any color that your car could be painted for an upcharge. in the '60s there was a custom color chart.

When it comes to gibson les pauls, from '52-57 you had gold tops, with the exception of the BB, and from 58-60 you had the (cherry?) burst.

But what is the story of custom color les pauls? were they offered before the 70s? I know people had some re-finned (jeff beck ox blood comes to mind), but I mean factory custom color.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I havent been able to find anything on the internet... for example, do ebony, or pehlam blue standards and some of the other colors we see in reissues actually exist? anyone have some pics?

I have an original red 59 Custom. There were about six of them made. I have pictures of three other ones besides mine. Phil Manzanera owned a red 60 custom from what I've been told, but I haven't seen a picture of him with it. Other than that, I've only seen tuxedo black customs from the 50's....

My friend has another of those cherry Customs. There was at least one black top Standard custom made.

yes and that's the way i like it.

I currently live in the same town he used to live for decades. I'm sitting here laughing to myself having a lot of cinema happening in my head. I see him pulling up to my garage where my brother and i used to work on our motorcycles, with his Honda CB50 when he was about 16 years of age.

I remeber the time i spent in his bandroom where they used to rehearse and remeber his crazy drummer showing up with some special jewelery showing the band's name as a pendant.

I saw him gigging in his hometown last year or was it two years ago and spent hours talking to his former keyboarder.

I wonder, wheter he lurks in here once in a while and will instantly know who i am

For the ultimate in rarity... how about a Green Burst?

Not the Peter Green Burst. Not a cherry sunburst that has faded to a greenish color. Not a modern Gecko burst.

I have heard rumors, from a couple of reliable sources, of an actual 1950s green (to yellow?) sunburst Les Paul.

    Believe it or not!
