When I was a budding guitarist, I remember reading an interview with Ritchie Blackmore where he posited that on average, saxophonists are as a rule better-educated than guitarists. I'd never really cared for sax as a tone on a song before that, but it made me listen. And I got to appreciate the instrument closest to lead guitar in most genres outside of rock and pop. I love the phrasing sax players use, dominated as it is by the need to breathe, and try to vibe on that when I solo myself.

    So, with no further ado:

My father was a music major in college (early 1960's) and, back then, the saxophone was looked down upon as not being a "real" orchestral instrument. Even though sax is his main instrument, he still had to deal with hard headed professors in college who gave him crap. My mother also has her Masters Degree in music and, since bassoon is her main instrument, she didn't face the same challenges - she had to take crap just for being a woman.

My father played alto sax, and I used his horn in High School Band. Later I played Tenor and Bari in College, as well as piano, etc (Music Majors were required to take a string, reed, brass, and piano).

Naturally my first love -and for a long time- has been guitar.

But I never really was all that enthralled with the sound of the jazz guitar necessarily. I MUCH prefer saxophone as the lead jazz instrument.

Lester Young says SO much on a horn.

"Baker Street" was the first time I ever heard a sax and said "hell yeah" -- I think I was 12. The Floyd, with Dick Perry blowing, is great stuff too.

Sadao Watanabe had a beautiful version of "I'm Old Fashioned," with the late Hank Jones on piano in concert. Absolutely killer, but the Vid is no longer up by whoever put it up.

Here's Ralph Towner (I think) with Sadao Watanabe, one one the greatest phrasing guys I've ever heard on sax.

I always thought I heard a lot of Coltrane in Gene Dinwiddie when he was with Paul Butterfield:

I'm a big sax fan. I know this is trite, I haven't dug nearly as far into jazz as I'd like, but Parker and Coltrane are mind-blowing.

No offense to any sax players mentioned already (or in the future)
And I don't know who is really playing the sax here, but this is my favorite sax player.

Jimi Hendrix was the first thing I thought of too :laugh2:

I agree that sax is probably the closest thing to guitar as far as lead instruments. For a long time I wanted to find a way to play guitar like John Coltrane plays sax, and then I discovered Frank Zappa and I'll be damned if that isn't exacty what he was doing :hmm:
