im buying pots to replace the broken stock ones on my epi. i still have the stock pickups in it and im wondering if it's possible to have coil taps? is it worth it or should i go the regular pot route. what value cap's do i need to buy.

oh yeah for those who read i said im sending it back. well i didn't get around to it yet. infact im gonna keep my honey burst. it's too risky sending it to musicians friend and having it sent back because the broken pot.

In order to coil tap you need some pickups with 4 conductors so no you won't be able to do that with the stock Epiphone pickups. I've thought about doing it with mine but don't feel like buyiong new pots at the moment heh. You can get a new set of Alpha pots but if you're really going to go through with it (especially since you have the Gibson top hat knobs) you might as well get some CTS pots

From recent experience. GO to RS guitar works and order the SUPERPOTS 500k short shaft for both volumes.
You can use Alpha or regular CTS pots for the tone.

The superpots made a worked of difference form the regular CTS pots on the volume side. Way better taper, easier turning, and all round better sounding.

IMO there is nothing wrong with ALPHA pots they work as well as the CTS I have in other guitars of mine , the ALPHA are direct fit. The super pot well might be some what better but does a person really need one? how many pots are bad? Untitled Page, ya need the 500K. coil tap IMO sucks. Most HBs with a coils tap thin the sound out too much for my ear. P-90s in a guitar. Or Fender single coils in strats or teles is the way to go, In other words get another guitar for single coil sound IMO.

Its OK, but to fit them (pots) you have to remove that little tab or metal sticking up on the side of the CTS pots , often called a shoulder . And you will have to ream out the holes so the fatter shafts will go through the body and lastly you will have to buy Gibson Knobs to fit those shafts. And at the end of the day you guitar will not function any better than if you used ALPHAs which do not require all that fitting crap. But hey its your guitar.
Caps, in tone freak section, a fellow did a test of many different types, good reading, most feel the Orange Drop 715P are good , and the Qs a little better.

I could point you t a million threads, most recently mine, where i did the same thing you are doing.

    Here is what I found.

    1. I tried Alpha, CTS and CTS SUperpots. All 500k, all split, short shaft.

    2. THE SUPERPOTS were FAR superior to the others in the VOLUME position.

    3. The Alphas i found to be the best TONE pots.

    4. You might have to bore out your holes a little to fit the CTS or SuperPots (i did and it is easy.)

    5. If you are going to spend the money on caps, buy the real thing. Vitamin Q (sprague, NOS) not a new knockoff version. The sound is different.

    6. You will pay more for superpots, but is $18 for 2 superior products really that much?

I hope this helped. I spent 4 days and countless hours soldering to come to these conclusions.

That OK just having fun with you.:) And for the last time that kit although requires some fitting deals is a good one. The short shaft ones that is. Changing pots and caps is the IMO least thing to concern yourself with some guys never use tone controls some could care less what they are , they use volume control and or amp setting and playing style set their tone. Some do not even have tone controls hooked up at all.

i use my tone controlls in the studio alot. also i play christian worship rock. ex, chris tomlin, hillsong, starfield. im having a guitar tech put them in and this time it's not the same guy who broke my damn pot. i just need the pots and caps the wiring isn't of any concern to me because it doesn't really affect the sound right? the tech is doing it for free becasue he's a good friend of mine. can i get a set of alpha's under $40-50. also does alot of wood have to come out for the cts pots to fit?
