Amp, Cabinet/Furniture Build.

Underway is a build that will be an amplifier, a cabinet with two 12" speakers, and a piece of furniture that will back into a corner of my family room.

The amp head will be a Ceriatone Expression. Mounted just below this will be a Weber Mass 100 attenuator and below this will be two Scumback 12" - M75-16HP 65w speakers. The dimensions overall will be 43.5" high x 18" wide x 10.5" deep.

The shell will be solid Oak, the baffle board is 11 Ply Baltic Birch and the facing will be 1/2" Oak Plywood.

Being as I gave most of my power tools to my son some time ago not thinking I'd need them any longer, this is mainly "hand made".

Here's some of the wood:

and some that was cut at the shop to my dimensions since I haven't a saw other than a hand saw.

More to follow if there's interest.

Hi Roman,

Well, as you will see I'm building this in my kitchen.

Here's my "cut-off" saw (note the "straight edge").

And here's my "ripping station" - as you'll notice I upgraded to a B&D Workmate I scored from Kijiji :-)

And, here's the baffle board with the cut-outs done with a dremel (really slow going !)

This is great! We all love a good build thread! For lack of tools, you're doing one hell of a job!

Thanks for the pics and keep them coming....

Re: Amp, Cabinet/Furniture Build.

This sounds very interesting and very promising! An amp that is going to serve as a furniture as well...? Very nice!Although it will probably take you some time, we're all ears (and eyes) for it. Keep us updated with pics man.

Sorry no, I'm such a lousy artist and never could draw very well.

I do better making a "list" and working from that, but, as with most "0ff-the-cuff" type projects, changes are made on-the-fly as necessary or desired. :-)

Re: Amp, Cabinet/Furniture Build.

Here's the grill frame with the "Speaker Directivity Modifier" in place, ready to place the grill cloth covering on it.
Thanks to Jay Mitchell for all his efforts in this regard. It makes sense to me so far and I will likely do a with/without test to see if I like it or not. Here's an explanation of the concept - Speaker Directivity Modifier :: TGP Webzine and here Speaker Directivity Modifier, Part II :: TGP Webzine
I'm going to wait for things to arrive before I go much further.
The new faceplate for the Weber Attenuator should be here next week (Black on Gold to match the amp head instead of the White on Black that it is now) so I'll be able to make the front panel opening the proper size.
In the mean time I'll continue to do some filling and sanding (love making dust !). :-)
I'm thinking I might put a vent (they have furnace floor duct covers in Oak that I can possibly modify to suit) on the top toward the rear over the tubes - need to think about this some more.

I just received notice from Nik at Ceriatone that my amp head was shipped. It should be here toward the end of the week.

Nice work, especially without some serious power tools. One question though.... if this is just a livingroom amp and you're using an attenuator full time, why dual 2x12's? Wouldn't one work just as well? Are you planning on playing this out at times?

I ask as I'm debating the issue for myself ... 2x12 is a little large for the l/room, but I'd like to use the same amp with the band. I'm thinking of a pair of custom cab 1x12's stacked.

Yes, one speaker would work just as well I suspect, however, I wanted a "piece of furniture" as well as an amp, and the height I wanted more-or-less dictated two speakers.
And, I have friends who are "serious guitarists" and they'd mock a single speaker amp !
A pair of 1 x 12s stacked would do the trick (and, be easier to move, too).

Re: Amp, Cabinet/Furniture Build.

Found the perfect solution to 'venting' the cab.

I found an Oak cold-air return vent cover that will be perfect for this build. The size is perfect and now all I need to do is properly locate and cut the hole into which I'll drop this.

Top view of the vent.

Bottom view of the vent.

And, the vent just sitting on the top of the cab at this time.
