My buddy just gave my a peavey xr400 and I was wondering if I could use this as a head? I am pretty new to all this and was wondering if this would work and then if it would what cab would you put it with under 300. Or would you just get a little black heart or the epi half stack for 250? Thanks my head is hurting from all this info.

Re: Peavey XR400 as my head??
you could use that for guitar but it would be better suited to bass, keyboards or acoustic guitars.....any distortion from that might sound harsh.....personally I would go with the blackheart, epi or something designed for guitar as opposed to sound reinforcement......but you may be able to get a unique sound from it...try it with a 2x12 guitar cabs or some 2x10 + horn bass cabs and see what kind of sounds you can get....just my opinion....
