Master volume

Ok, all you amp gurus, tell me if I am going to damage anything by doing this. Ok, I recently modded my Dual Rec and made the Loop a series loop instead of Parallel. Well what I found is that I can turn the send way down and turn the output and master to about noon and it is loud, but not screaming loud, so in reality, I am using my send signal as a master volume. Is this going to damage anything?

Re: Master volume

Hmm... that doesn't sound right, my friend.

I used to run the master pretty high on my Dual Rec, but I don't think you want your send knob to be your master volume. Might make things run hotter on your input tranny.

Did you wind up doing Mesa's mod, or the other fellow from the boogieboards?

Re: Master volume

I did the one I got from the boogie board. The mesa mod did not work well and the mod I got from the boogie board allows me to retain the solo switch. The master volume that I am referring to is not whisper quiet, but what it's basically doing from what I can tell is dampering the signal, then the power section has to work harder to send the weaker signal to the cabinet. An attentuator takes the powered signal and dampens it, so I don't see why one would be harder than the other. But I trust your opinion Loki, you have not steered me wrong in the past, so tell me if my logic is flawed.

Damn. My posts have been EPIC FAIL's lately. Where is the love? I used to get responses in here, now you treat me like the toothless lady who lives in the trailer park with boils all over her.

Re: Master volume

It's probably ok... But I'll talk to my guy about it. He's a genius.. Just finished a dual master volume setup on my old 800 that is SMOKIN'!

Totally silent switching, no tone changes at all, just 2 master volumes so I can control my own boost. I came up with a rough idea and he turned it into magic!

Re: Master volume

I don't see the difference. Think about a volume pedal. You are dampening the signal before the pre-amp. So each thing does the same thing, but in a different part of the signal chain. A volume pedal dampens before pre-amp, my method dampens after pre and before power and an attenuator dampens post power amp. Maybe I am too simplistic, but is there a big difference where you dampen the signal? Where is Coldsteal, he is the amp master, I fully expected him to chime in or Greg.

NICE! If I knew a guy that could do that, I probably would've bought a JCM.

Re: Master volume

Thats the way I run my Triple, I turn on the effects loop and use the loop master as my master volume. Ive had a couple of older Recs and this newer one and have done that since day one. I like it better than an attenuator.

Re: Master volume

Well then I guess I am not going to destroy anything!!! It didn't seem to me it would harm anything, but you have to ask! Thanks for the info.
