Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

I use external cabs for my combo. I'll use my 2x12 or 4x12. I get the best sound with the 4x12 but it's a bitch to carry around.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

The four speakers have a sound that combos just don't. It's not better or worse, just different.

It's not about volume. My AC30 sounds louder than my 50 Watt Marshall stack.

I think it is the same mindset that people have, where more watts in an amp makes it automatically better. Why could any non-touring musician need to have such a large amp?

Hi from Tulsa too!

I wish I had a half stack

The only combo that I think can handle a big venue is the Peavey 5150. Other than that a half stack or full stack is very useful.

What about Mesa's?

I've heard countless stories of bands going into gigs and blowing people away with their small Mesa combo.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

I think there are multiple combos that can handle pretty decent sized venues. I know my AC50 could carry enough sound to hurt quite a few people ears

sidetrack- Wow, BlackStrat is a Tulsan too. I was wondering if there was any body from around town on the boards and sure enough there is 3 alone in this thread. What's up fellas!

Besides who doesn't want to look at the backline and see a wall of Marshalls behind you? Granted I only have 1 full stack left now, my last gig was almost 10 years ago and I've sold a ton of gear since then.

I replaced my cabs a few times.

ROFLMAO.

Why would you have a 'wall' of Valvestate Marshalls? lmao

For what that would of cost, you could of had a 'real' Marshall.

Brett actually I used the Valvestates as a replacement for a pair of 1984 JCM 800 2203's that I was using, the constant travel and increasing maintenance costs on the tube heads made them not cost effective for me. The VS series sound a lot better than people think, which is cool with me as I can pick them up cheap now.

Tube amps are not the best solution for all things, although they are great there have been advances in technology since 1930's tube developments.

My current "real" Marshalls are combos- DSL 401 and JTM60.

Of course since actually playing guitar has only paid for my house and everything else I own, I'm probably not qualified to judge what amps suit my needs. BTW, I was in Eddie's yesterday, some really nice gear you guys have, snazzy guitars.

I'm in St Louis until next friday then I am flying back home to Houston I have auditions for a new drummer coming up.

I'm going to check out a '73 JMP 1987 today. I feel like adding a few extra inches to my dong.

I was just busting your balls a little . I'm sure you know what you need being as you have apparently bought yourself a house, amongst all your other possesions by playing the guitar. That JTM sounds like it would be pretty gnarly. A buddy of mine put a Valvestate through hell and it held up much better than my JCM900 did when I was touring with it (that amp kind of sucked, I like my Orange a lot more). I don't really see the need for a Valvestate 'stack' though. I think its kind of stupid to have multiple 4x12 cabinets for solid-state things (yeah yeah yeah, I know it has a tube in it).

I don't recall talking to you when you were in, if you did at all. You should of said hi

I'm getting an Orange 2x12 to stack on my Orange 4x12, add a couple to my dong as well

Actually, I'm just getting it for grab n' go purposes. That 4x12 is KILLING ME man. That is going to the practice space and staying there, and then getting moved in a road case with wheels STRICTLY haha.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

Brett I will try to come back by, I was in a hurry and just ducked in to peek at some things. I want to meet some of the MLP members up here, I don't know when I'll be back in St Louis.

I want to play the HOB next summer so we will see, if we gig up here I will contact you, BB and Dennis.

The funny thing about the VS it has taken a pounding from the 12 years I've owned it and stands up favorably to my other gear.
