I think its mostly the versatility that you can switch between speakers alot easier

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

Regardless, I still think a 4x12/2x12 set-up is generally protocol. You need that much to be able to hear well on stage, I think anyways.

And like I said, sometimes, you never know what situation your going to find yourself in.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

The ability to switch heads and cabs in different combinations. Right now I have an Orange Tiny Terror head. Loud as hell for its size, and more versatile than people give it credit for. Has its own gig-bag in which you can pack up the TT and throw it over your shoulder. I only have a 1x12 cab with it right now, and thats all I need for home use and recordings. Thats all I do right now. but using that same head with a future 4x12 for gigs is a great thing to be able to do. No tube rattle, 2-head rigs, etc. Its not the size of the stack, its being able to have stacks of different sizes.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

Yeah dude, I totally agree with you there. I'm going to be getting an Orange 2x12 cab in the future. Then, if I want I can use the 4x12 or the 2x12... Or use'em together

Boles has penis envy - he'll chime in very soon, and lie - telling you that it is the tone he is after.

But seriously - some nice tube half stacks put out great tone, despite being too loud for most applications to include small venues. Solid state half and full stacks? I call that a terrible use of hard earned money, and a bigger concern over looks than functionality or tone.

Hope you don't mind me quoting you... you just said everything that could be said on the subject, and I agree with all of it.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

At minimum, I run a Half stack, I only ever mic up once cab anyway. Combos don't cut it for metal, you need the bass response from a sealed cabinet.

Mostlye, I use a full stack, run in stereo, for a couple of reasons

1) I use the top cabinet as my monitor... only the bottom cabint (the better of the two) is mic'd up. If I'm having a problem with the sound guy getting the mix right in the monitor, i just turn up the top cabinet until i can hear myself from behind, and thats all...

2) sometimes, when playing dive bars, they either don't have a PA, or don't have enough channels.. I don't have to worry about it with 180 watts of POW-AH!

3) It LOOKS cool I'd have a wall of cabinets if i could afford it (and had the room on stage!)

Lawlz..

Earlier days, They used a Gibson SG *Cherry* and a Gibson Goldtop Les Paul. They actually controlled all their presets themselves via Boss GT8's and I wanna say... Marshalls...?

Later days, I've seen a Dark Fire, and some different SG's/Les Pauls custom built for them. No pedalboards in sight, My guess is they are running Boss GT-Pros and just go straight to the mixer board while their techs control their effects.

(I know, You were joking.)

A wall of cabs? Do what the pros do nowdays. Put up a bunch of empty cabs. They are cheaper and lighter to carry and no one will know the difference.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

Penis envy? ROFLMAO

When any of you guys can say you clocked 30 something gigs (through five states) in barely a three months span, lived off of dollar menus, and slept in a Chevy Blazer... You can talk about what is over-kill and what isn't. I'm telling you man. Some situations aren't as easy as the the whole 'dive-bar' cover gig. And my situation, the broke, independent artist... Doesn't always guarantee your going to be playing in a club (or even indoors, or even WITH a p-a) with somebody who knows what your doing. A 4x12 cab IS rock n' roll, why? Because that is what works. Don't believe me, then see for yourself.

It would be awesome if I could get by with a 1x12. I bet if me and my bassist downsized, it would cut down on gas expenses for sure.

Hehe.

Got to be said that big rig to make up for penis deficiencies is better than the alternative (a big penis lacks appeal as a substitute for a guitar rig).

Well yes, but a Ford Transit on this side of the water. And I can echo your sentiments entirely. 4 x 12s for the guitar and the biggest bass rig I could lay my hands on at the time. The alternatives (small amp and trust the PA/sound man I guess) would have made the whole deal an embarassment. You find out who your friends are when you go out and play for a bit. Most of mine say "Marshall" on the front and have 4 celestions in the cabinet.

I think a head and a 2x12 cab would be the best option for me now(ease of transportation) But I have a 2x12 combo.

The Ford Transit is now available on this side of the Atlantic. It seats 5 and looks like it can hold all your needs.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

I bought mine originally in the 90's because of the size of venues I was playing in, and it wasn't cool for metal bands to have combo amps onstage.

Besides who doesn't want to look at the backline and see a wall of Marshalls behind you? Granted I only have 1 full stack left now, my last gig was almost 10 years ago and I've sold a ton of gear since then.

I replaced my cabs a few times.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

I like stacks simply because it allows you to be versatile via having a separate head that you can always take with you and attach to any cab. Plus they are a hell of a lot lighter if you have to bring it anywhere for repairs etc.

Maybe these things are too loud for smaller bars, but to get the "Seek and Destroy" feeling at home they are perfect.

Larger cabs = more resonance and lower signal response, you get a deeper punchier sound. Thus the reason for stacks and true tone seekers.

Re: Why do so many people buy stacks?

If you are only using your amp and NOT going thru the P.A. and playing smaller rooms with any volume, believe me, somewhere in the room you sound like absolute shit so don't believe your drunk friends. Getting a pro to help you at least get started with sound is money very well spent. If you are getting paid invest in your sound and give them their moneys worth, that's always been my motto. Also, a guitarist may be the worst person in the band to judge the house sound.

Been there, got fired doing that.

Into the P.A. is always the way to go.
