Question Fender Super Champ XD ?

Has anyone tried, or owned a new Super Champ XD, or a Vibro Champ XD?
SC is 15 watt and VC is 5 watt. It's a tube amp with 16 preamp models. What I can't find out is: is there a straight tube preamp setting...like position 1 or something, or is the model all solid state.
I've heard a few clips and they sound pretty nice but it's really hard to tell from mpeg or jpeg samples. No one around here has one to try.

Re: Fender Super Champ XD ?

As I was recently out looking for a decent practice amp I had the opertunity to hear a Vibrochamp really put through its paces. My playing is for shit so I made one of the sales guys put several amps through their paces on different settings to get a good feel for the tone of each. He was all about the Vox Valvetronics 30 and it was decent sounding untill I made him play the Vibrochamp. The tone on the clean channel ( I think its called Voice? its #16 on the selector) was amazing. It made the Vox sound flat and lifeless in comparison. He admited that he hadn't had the opertunity to play the Vibro before and was stunned by how good it sounded, and considering the price felt that it was a way better performing amp. Sadly it didn't have the "silent mode" speaker kill switch and headphone output that I required so I was forced to leave that little gem on the shelf.

Re: Fender Super Champ XD ?

Pronstar, thanks for the input.
I really liked the Vox Valvetronix too. But then I heard the Fender and decided to give it a try. I know a guy who just picked one up, so now I can hear it up close, and personal...I'm partial to Fender amps, my last tube amp was a '65 or '66 Deluxe Reverb...wish I hadn't sold it.

I bought a VCXD and thinks it is a cool amp for the money. This sucker gets pretty loud for 5 watts. I like the tweed and black face the best. I'm not sure but I don't think you can bypass the voice control. No it's not vintage but not a bad little amp for not much $$... Gibsonblues

Re: Fender Super Champ XD ?

I'm thinking about getting a Super Champ XD. I've heards some of the clean sounds (which sound great), I'd just like some advice on how the OD/dirty voicings sound and how it compares to the Valvetronix range?

Would I need to buy an overdrive/distortion pedal for playing stuff like Led Zep, GNR, Velvet Revolver, etc or would the OD voicings be ok for this?

I've currently got a Valvetronix AD15VT, which I like a lot but some of the clean channels are very bassy and no amount of knob turning helps. I read on the valvetronix.net that this was an inherent feature of the amp that cant be overcome.

I like the Vox amps too. I bought a AD50VT and liked the tones I was able to get. I have been interested in the vintage low watt Fenders for awhile but didn't want to spend the bucks at this point. (Daughter in college). I played one of the Vibro Champ XD's and thought it was cool. Also played the Super Champ XD. Like it too! I went with the 5 watt Vibro model. Man I love this little amp. I think the Super Champ XD is selling pretty well and I bet you would like it. 15 watts should get cooking for you! I've still been looking around and looked at a few low watt vintage Fenders such as the Vibro Champ, Super Champ and the old Princeton. Gotta get one of those at some point. I spent about an hour on the VCXD tonight running a 69 Strat through it and it sounded pretty damn good. Good luck with the SCXD... Gibsonblues

Run an external EQ through it. Will give you a much wider range of control and with the onboard effects and amp models, will probably be the only pedal you'll need. The EQ really opens it up.

Jon ... The voicing on the new Champs are digitally modeled. To me, on a small amp like the Vibro or Super, I'm more interested in the clean tones. These come with 8" and 10" speakers respectively. I'm not expecting to get the big overdrive and distortion from them. Now they model several amps cranked up and it doesn't sound bad. Just not pushing much air with the smaller speakers, especially the 8". I've read reviews on these amps stating that they take pedals with no problem. I haven't tried this myself. I'm pedal poor at the moment with only a Boss SD1 and I haven't tried running this through the VCXD. You might be able to get a close sound like you are looking for. Go to a music store that stocks the SCXD and play around with it. You may find it works for you with the voicing it already has. Again, the cranked voices don't sound too bad. I was looking for the clean Fender tone and I've found the Vibro Champ XD foots the bill for me. The folks you mentioned were (are) playing through Marshall stack or other large stacks. I don't know that I would expect to get that from a small combo amp though the sound may be OK for you. Good luck... Gibsonblues ....
