Looking to buy my first Tube amp

Hello, kind of need some advice. A few people here and a few friends I know have suggested to me I get a tube amp so I went amp scouting today and was curious if any of you guys have owned or tried these amps.

The main ones that caught my eye were:

Epiphone Blues Custom 30W $745
Epiphone Valve Standard $399.99
Spider Valve 112 $499.99
Vox VT-30 (Hyprid amp) $280
Fender Blues Junior $590

Basically I'm looking for an amp that can be versitale, but also have some nice tone for Blues Rock (SRV) and rock (Foo Fighters) I also tried to look for a Peavey Classic 30, but that seems to be hard to come by. I would like to stay in the 300-450 range, but the Blues Custom and Junior did catch my eye.

Also I will be going back to use one of my own guitars on these amps, but would love to get your guys opinions.

Btw I also heard that sweetwater.com offers free shipping. Does that include going to Canada? Thanks

Of those mentioned, I would strongly consider seeking out that Classic 30. I wouldn't trade mine for anything else you listed.

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

As much as it pains me, because Hartley Peavey has run his name into the ground SO bad with his Chinese amps......

If you can find a Classic 30, it is a damned good rig for the money and size.

I would rather see you save up and buy a Mesa, but I know how it is.......

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

Of your choices, I'd consider the Epi Blues Custom or the Fender Blues Jr. I like the Blues Custom as it's got some great tone to it. But so does the Blues Jr.

I've never heard a Peavey Classic 30, but I understand they are pretty sweet too. I think they tend to have a bit more gain than the Epi or Fender choices you listed.

The VOX VT series stuff are hybrid-amps and not true tube amps. The Spider isn't bad either, but it's got alot of extra junk that can get in the way sometimes.

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

I've got a blues junior, they rock, but $590? No way, they're around $500 and I bet you could find a used one for less.

these are actually pretty cool little amps too

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

Hmm I guess I'll have to look at ebay or craigslist for the classic 30. I do tend to agree about the spider valve. The idea of having 200+ presets just sounds wasteful when I just want to get one solid tube amp. I plan on keeping my spider II to mess around with.

I did see a bunch of Mesa at Long and Macquade but I think the lowest one I saw was close to 900 dollars which is far out of my price range.

Then again I did spot this Epiphone So-Cal 50 system

And this Marshall Haze series

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

If you go Blues Jr., spend a little more and get the tweed. I've had a couple regular ones, and they were fine. The tweed ones just sounded so much sweeter though.

Anyway, have fun! Buying new gear should always be a great time.

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

The blues junior is a great little amp - even the stock version. It was my first tube amp also.

Maybe have a look at the Vox Night Train also - around $499 - you'll need a separate speaker cab though as its just the head... Also perhaps look at the Orange Tiny Terror - that comes as a head and also a combo version.

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

I just looked up the Vox Night train and I have to agree it has some excellent tone but I'm looking for something that can have that SRV tone, but also the crunch sound that bands like Foo Fighters has. Thus far I have narrowed my list of amps to try.

1.)Epiphone Blues Custom
2.) Epiphone Valve Standard
3.) Spider Valve
4.) Fender Blues Junior
5.) Orange Tiny Terror

The vox night train would have been on the list, but my music store doesn't have them in so I would have to order it which I'm not too keen since why order something you can't try out right? Anyways hopefully will have a decision by this Saturday after I spend my time trying out the amps.

But Eddy let me know about the SRV like tone for the Night Train. That amp has caught my eye for sure.

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

Well just got back from Long and Macquade and I'm surprised I came out of it. I tried these amps.

1. Epiphone Blues Custom - Awsome clean tone, but dirty channel was off somewhat. It didn't have a mass to the sound if you know what I mean, but still it was a nice amp.

2. Epiphone Valve Standard - The Single clean channel was alright but not as good as the custom or Fender amps. The effects felt cheap and not worth having. I thought my Spider II effects were a little better.

3. Fender Blue's Junior - High clean tone, and excellent articulation but the lack of a crunch channel was a hit against it. Then again in a couple of years I wouldn't mind getting this just to play clean tones.

4. Fender Hot Rod Deluxe - Didn't really get a chance to try it considering it didn't want to connect. The salesman tried to figure around with it, but I just had this feeling to not even look at it considering it seemed broken or someone messed up wtih it.

At the end of it all I was slightly disappointed and was close to just picking the epiphone blues custom even though the dirty channel didn't quite measure up but then the salesmen pointed me to a new amp that came out on the market.

The Traynor YCV40WR Custom Valve - 40w 1x12'' for $770 Canadian.

Traynor Amps: All Tube Guitar Combos

I was reluctant at first to try it considering it was $25 bucks more then the Custom, but I'm glad I did. The clean channel was so bright and clear. It matched the SRV tone I was going after and the chrunch channel could be clean/messy but just down right hard nose crunch when you pressed the boost. Even the clean channel had a bright boost.

For the first time I think I found an amp that in my opinion could be classified as the perfect Fender/Marshall hyprid and it suited my style to a T. Also compared to the Epiphone Blues Custom it weighed a lot less about 30lbs I figured, and it came with a foot switch. And finally Canadian Made. I can now buy something from my home country lol.

So I placed a deposit down on the amp to hold it for me till December. It's going to be a christmas present from my folks and of course they don't want me to have it till then which is so hard now that I have a taste for it and have to toll away on my Spider II.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll be sure to post pics of the coming amp soon.

Great choice! I'm a big Traynor fan. Mine's 35 years old.

It's going to be a long wait till Christmas!

Man you have wait to Christmas.Isnt that some kind of torture?Tell Santa to start at your house when he starts delivering presents. That Traynor and the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe look like they are almost the same amp on paper. If you live in Canada it makes sense to get the Canadian Traynor.I noticed only 2 years on the warranty,Fender has five.I have 7 years on mine(extended).

Thanks for that link. I had another online retailer beat that price by 10% so I ordered one. Seems like a fun little amp.

Re: Looking to buy my first Tube amp

I Recently bought a peavey classic 50 212 its an awesome amp. i've had a hot rod deluxe, and a deville the clean channel is good on the fenders but the lead channel blows and i don't think its even useful. but good luck on your decision.

I'm in the same boat. I need a new amplifier, and I think I'm going with the Blues Custom 30. I like the fact it has 212 speakers, and you can change the wattage. Maybe the peavy classic 30. I'm a fan of class A amps, but I can't decide which one to get.

I bought a Blues Jr. last winter and put a Warehouse Vintage 30 clone in it and it is great. GC sell them for $500, Craig's list as low as $300. I would have looked at the Epi Valve Sr. but it didn't become available until last week. The 18 or 20 watt combo goes for $360.

Toogy, have you considered going for a vintage Traynor? Pick up a vintage head (YBA,YRM,YSR) and then any 4x12 cab that that appeals.

Here's a YBA youtube clip. Great tone!
