Jensen Speaker Question

I've seen vintage Black frame Jensen speakers and vintage Blue frame Jensen speakers both with single digit year numbers such as 220143, which ones are the oldest?
I mean this number could mean that they're 61's or 51's right?
So I'm supposing color must be the deciding factor, No!

Re: Jensen Speaker Question

Cantu, I can't say for sure but I would suspect the blue one's are older. I purchased, some time back, two pair (4) P10R's that were silver. The baskets and parts are the same as the blue one's. My understanding is that they came out of 50's era Organ's, and to designate them at the factory for Organs, Jensen painted them silver. Mine are dated 1-pair, 2200745 and 1-pair, 2200747, close enough for me, I had them reconed and put them in my tweed Bassman.

So yours were 1957's then, eh? I have a 53 Tweed Super that have the blue ones in it but someone took the bell covers off, so I'm looking for some period correct covers!
I also have a 56 Tweed Deluxe that has the wrong speaker in it and thats what I'm looking for and was on ebay and keep seeing Black ones that people are saying are 56's and thus what inspired me to write this thread!

Re: Jensen Speaker Question

Wow! A '56 tweed Deluxe. I'm envious.
According to the pictures in my "Soul of Tone" book the correct speaker would have a black frame with a gold foil label on the bell cover. Hope that helps.

Were you able to see the speaker and date codes in that book also?

Re: Jensen Speaker Question

It doesn't show one in a deluxe but lots of pics of twins and bassmans of that era. It does state that sometime during 1957 Jensen switched from the gold foil label on the bell cover to the blue and silver label used to this day if that helps. Something to remember is an old speaker is an old speaker (profound, eh?). You may pay alot for a vintage speaker that may blow soon after you install it...there's no guarantee it's any good. If you really want to use the amp but are desiring a vintage tone I would suggest you look at one of Ted Weber's VST speakers. I have one in my Vibro Champ and it is simply amazing and new too. Here's a link to his site Weber Speakers - Making the world a bit louder each day.

Yep, I have a weber in my vibro champ also and ordered a set of 10's from him for my super and a 12 for the deluxe but what I'm looking for is authenticity. I store the originals and if I go to sell the amps I'll put the originals back in.
Thats good info about the foil labels!! Thanks.
One thing I noticed about the weber in my champ, it made it louder and cleaner, I guess its more efficient eh?

Re: Jensen Speaker Question

Oh the Weber definetely is louder due to it's higher effeciency. I read in one of Dave Hunter's books that a 3db increase in speaker efficiency is perceived by the ear as a doubling of wattage so your 6 watt champ sounds like a 12 watt. Also, it will be cleaner now because at the same volume you are not having the speaker distort. What I really like is now I can get output tube distortion without the sound turning to mud from a farting speaker. I'm really hooked on 6V6 distortion now and rarely use my Traynor because all I can get is preamp distortion and it's just not the same thing. By the way, which Weber did you put in the champ. I went with the 8A125 to get the bigger voice coil and magnet for better bass and midrange.

8A125-O, I like the smooth cone its really a sweet speaker and man Ted is a super nice dude.
I had a problem with another speaker I had gotten from him and he was in the hospital with pneumonia and he answered my email right away and wanted me to send him the model and ohms of the speaker and he had one sent out to me that week! I was impressed to say the least. Will buy from Weber from now on, not only great sounding speakers but incredible customer service.
I'm also thinking about getting an Amp DIY kit from him the 5E3. I want to see if I build one if it sounds as good as my 56

This is dead on.
I have a pair of old P12R's out of an old cabinet I am selling on EBay, 1957 HI-FI console- they are silver, however the exact same basket as the other color~ heck, they are the same speakers, just a different color is all to designate what they were to go in.
Hopefully someone as well versed as you guys buys them; would like to know they find a good home.
