question about speaker ohms!?!?!?!?

hey there my fellow tone gurus,I have a situation here with a student:his parents bought him a Blackheart head for his Bday, his 4x12 is a Traynor. The dilema is this.....I dont have too much experience with all this new equip,as ya'll know Im a plug and play guy, but, this head has 2-4ohm jacks,2-8ohm and 1-16 ohm.The cab has 1-4ohm,2-8ohm and 1-16 ohm and a !selector!switch for mono(260 watts) and stereo(130 watts),any help as to what goes where!!!! The last head and cab I had was a old tuck'n'roll Kustom 200(solid state) in '79 and I really dont recall any selector switches!!!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!! yes,Im gonna do my homework,BUT,in the meantime......

Re: question about speaker ohms!?!?!?!?

Plug the 16ohm speaker out from the head to the 16 ohm input on the cab. Switch on mono. Everything else would be for running multiple speaker cabs or running two heads into a single cab(the stereo switch and 2 8 ohm inputs on the cab).

Re: question about speaker ohms!?!?!?!?

Another impedance question:

I have a crate V8 amp that has a 4 ohm speaker, there are only 2 speaker leads on the transformer. Can I connect an 8 ohm speaker with out damaging the amp? I'm thinking that a higher # is ok just not a lower one.
Any suggestions? (other than getting rid of the cheesy amp)

Re: question about speaker ohms!?!?!?!?

Why not put two 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel and then you have 4 ohm to match your amp. Why take a risk and blow things up.

Re: question about speaker ohms!?!?!?!?

That would be cool but.... I already have an 8 ohm 2x12 cab that I use with another amp, I think the little V8 might sound better with a decent speaker.

Re: question about speaker ohms!?!?!?!?

You'll be alright plugging into an 8 ohm cab just don't plug into a 2!!!
You'll lose a little volume but it won't hurt anything!

Re: question about speaker ohms!?!?!?!?

Yeah, the 4ohm into 8ohm cab should be fine. I wouldn't dime the amp though. How safe an impedance mismatch is tends to depend on the amp and it's transformers. Marshalls and Voxes usually can't handle mismatches, but a lot of vintage Fenders and some Ampegs were designed to handle mismatches. I like to run my Ampeg V4 at 8 ohms into a 16 ohm cab and it works like an attenuator. I get the thickest grind with the volume up at noon. Past 1:00 and the amp sounds like it's going to blow.
