Re: Lots of People Looking For/At Low Wattage Amps!

I recently purchased the Kustom 5H Defender Tube amp head. I recently finished building my own speaker cab. I am new to Tube amps. Is there suppose to be "noise" when you turn on the amp? It is not coming from the speaker, just the amp iteslf. I did a little research online, I guess the power transformer makes some noise?? Anyone have any experience with what I am taking about? My previous amp is solid state and is noiseless. Thank you - Sleazer69

Looky what dat 'ol Santa done gone'n bring'n me!

Vox AC4TV. 0.25w - 4w, 10" Celestion speaker.

Compared it with a Fender Super Champ XD and a Crate Palomino 8 yesterday and it really has the most stunning sound.

Highly recommend it, anyone else using one?

Sleazer, there can be an ever-so slight hum generated by the power transformer in a tube amp. You shouldn't be able to hear it unless the room is quiet and you put you ear close. You should have the amp checked out if the hum is loud.

Re: Lots of People Looking For/At Low Wattage Amps!

Anyone looking for a low watt amp who enjoys building stuff should check out ax84.com They provide schematics, layouts and lots of help for a number of low wattage designs. I built the firefly, which is a high gain 1.5 watts - you can find it in their archived projects section. I am now thinking I NEED to build a LP to plug into it.

Well, as soon as you turn on the amp, you here noise. It is definitely noticeable. It just seems odd that an amp is tolerable if it has this type of noise coming from it. I am new to tube amps...so maybe I am over reacting. I guess I should just get it checked out. I hope it doesn't cost a fortune though. I got this amp Used (rated #1 condition - Like New) off of Musician's Friend. I've had it too long to return it. Besides the noise, holy Cr*p! I am sold on tube amps! You get a way better tone in my opinion on these. And pedals sound really good connected to them. Thanks! -Sleazer

My Mesa Mark V will do 10, 45, or 90 watts through my 412 Recto Cab which allows me to get Boogie tone at any venue or any size room... it's an awesome amp.

Re: Lots of People Looking For/At Low Wattage Amps!

Hi, I've been trying out a few historic/sig LPs and came across the Carr Mercury by accident. It has a gorgeous full clean tone considering just a 12" cab (There's a mini version with a 10"), with just a few controls you can get so many tones out of it from clean, to blues to rock. and by working the with the attenutator and boost you can get almost any sound at the volume you want, perfect for recording or the bedroom, and a small gig (or mic it of course). definitley worth trying.

This is the overdriven sound:

and clean (on a strat, but a nice one 54 ltd edition custom shop)

I'm about to get one!

Wow. That Strat actually sounds like a Strat! Nice.

But how did you manage to grow so much hair between clip A and clip B? Gotta get me some of that, whatever it is...

I'm a big fan of this small amp. A 1965 Fender Vibro Champ. I bought it new
in 1965 and have been playing it for 45 years. It did get played hard the first few years and it still works and sounds great. I clean the pots every 10 years or so and as you see in the picture I've still got the box it shipped in.
A great little house amp. I did put a couple new tubes in it a few years ago.

Thumbs up Re: Lots of People Looking For/At Low Wattage Amps!

Boutique alternatives are those made by HOT, i.e.:
- HOT - Two Way - 10W, possibility to switch between tubes (EL34/6L6GC)+DI
- HOT - Finest (combo) - class A 15W
- HOT - Croaking Macho - 5W or 10W version - originally developed for harmonica, however with guitar it sounds also very nicely
- HOT - The Thirty Two - 15W

LOL, so true, I recently sprung the bucks for a Carvin Bel Air, not you 5-15wt but I have considered the PRS sweet16. I played one several weeks ago and the thing sounds so clean that you almost get swept away with the smooth sounds of an accoustic like tone.

How do you like the TSA? I gave some serious thought to one of these, but for my purposes (late night bedroom playing) went with a Blackheart Killer Ant instead.

Heck, even at .25 watt I have to turn the Killer Ant down after the kids go to bed.

Woah! That Matamp has it all. I wonder if it comes in a combo? I like the ease of a combo instead of a head . I think that built in attenuator sells the amp!

they will build you a combo-version if you ask them. in fact they are pretty rare, dunno why. it´s such a great sounding amp.

Just purchased a Kasha Rockmod Brick . No ones mentioned them here. Stellar cleans, killer overdrive,10 Watts ,tube buffered Effects loop ,Two chanels with a volume boost ,all foot switchable. More features and bigger sound than any low watter I've ever seen.

Re: Lots of People Looking For/At Low Wattage Amps!

I just got this, It's a 30 Watt solid state with a ten inch speaker (Celestion I believe), but it's physically small so I guess it sort of counts. The cleans sound good. The "dirt" channel doesn't thrill me but that's nothing new with me - most "drives" leave me flat and unimpressed anyway. It was 90 dollars.

So it joins my other small one:

Re: Lots of People Looking For/At Low Wattage Amps!

well after saying I didnt have the need for a backup amp....My orange has gone a bit funny the past week and almost really dropped me right in it at a gig on friday so Im looking for...you guessed it...a low wattage, cheap amp....

fat warm, smooth, dirty blues rock tone......FREE/clutch/ratm kinda things would be good....

I had a tiny terror for a short time....Didnt get much of a go but was ok but Id rather get something that sounds a bit different to my rocker 30 head.

I like the look of the Laney lionheart but its a tad too expensive for the backup amp budget.

Somewhere between an orange and an old marshall would be good. I want a head version to go with a matamp/orange 2x12 cab and am looking for a 15w plus, class A with great feel/soul and around tiny terror money.

I'm telling ya . Check out the Kasha Rockmod Brick .I just picked one up on E-bay for $420 . Its exactly what you are looking for .Its 12 watts EL84 tubes. (I believe its rated at 12 clean ) Its realy about the same a a typical 18 watt amp. Its class A . Beautiful Vox chime cleans and killer crunch to high gain . Two channels and volume boost in the footswitch. Excellent effects loop and midi capable if you need it . These are great amps that are not realy on the radar and come up every so often for a steal. Real boutique quality stuff for a bargian
