Question Jimmy page hiwatt custom 50 & 100

What do you guys think about this historic recreation of Jimmy Page's coveted HIWATT amp? The sound clips sounds like they nailed it, anyone here have one or have any experience with REEVES amplification? Curious if this is the same Dave Reeves that used to manufacture for HIWATT or just a spin off company using his name?

Here's the link.

Re: Jimmy page hiwatt custom 50 & 100

I have heard of this amp and Reeves is an excellent maker, will have to give one a try soon ..

There's also a few others producing this type of amp, but Reeves customer support is the best of the bunch imho ..

A 50 in white would be sweet to tool around with for sure !!

I know Page has a custom 50 and a custom 100, and he still uses both on occasion ..

Thank you for posting

Re: Jimmy page hiwatt custom 50 & 100

ive played some old highwatts, and they seem very fidgity to me, dialing in the tone was had because it seems really "treble spike-y bright", or overly fuzzed

im sure jimmy's fuzz pedals really helped him in getting that early live zeppelin sound

Weird ..

Hiwatt is an superb amp in every way imho, and they love stompbox's due to the incredible headroom they have ..

Perhaps the finest made amp coming out of England is a Hiwatt custom, and Reeves was the one that put them on the map, with the DR-103 early on ..

I just had a chance to run thru a new Hiwatt 'studio stage' 20/40 and I have to tell ya it was f'n incredible !

The circuitry on JP's Hiwatts was a lot different to a standared one...

Yup ..

The Reeves is a buy at those prices for what you get imho ..

A nice Hiwatt head retails for about $4,500.00 without any JP mods ..

I have never played a real HIWATT that I didn't like. But if it wasn't made by Hylight Electronics............keep looking.

The Reeves amps are great for the money, but they use the Reeves name without permission of the Reeves family...........

Re: Jimmy page hiwatt custom 50 & 100

Hylight Electronics was the name of Dave Reeves' company that made HIWATT Amplifiers. He could not get copy rights for the name HIWATT as the attorneys felt it was just an adjective and all amplifiers at the time could be described as "high wattage".

When Reeves' died accidently in March 1981, his administrative assistant in collusion with the solicitor (attorney) of the estate effectively stole the HIWATT name from Reeves' children. Mary Clifford the administrative assistant hid several orders from the courts, who decided the company was worth nothing. Then the solicitor decided that if the Reeves' family wanted to buy the name from the courts they could.

At this point Reeves' widow was a single mother, raising three kids on her own. She had no means to buy the HIWATT name.

See mhuss.com for lots of good HIWATT info.

Or the best HIWATT forum on the web. vintageHIWATTconvention.com/Index page

The new In Name Only HIWATTs available today are just that. In Name Only.

If Music Ground were in the United States, they would be legally bound to change the ridiculous claims that their amps are built just like the Dave Reeves' originals. It is blatant and false advertising.

It is just some slick marketing.

The only legitimate HIWATTs were made by Hylight Electronics.

i would have to agree, as i have a new generation hiwatt dr103 that is
probably the best sounding amp that i have heard.
well she went down and took out the mains fuse. i replaced the tubes and
fuse- now with the presence all the way up, it sounds like it is a fish
frier (i also found all preamp section tubes ecc83, should have had
ecc81 in v4, i did replace it with nos mullard ecc 81- i wonder if i got a
bad one )

they don't make them like they use to !

the only down side to a hylight built hiwatt is that it is, imo, a collectors
item and should not be modded in any way.

a kit from vintage hiwatt restorations, along with good research is going to
be the best bang for the buck and you have control over the parts to be used, and the circuit which they are to be used in.

Zero,
you are right. I would hate to mod a Hylight. There are lots of them out there that have been modded, and thus removed from the collectability issue.

actually the only mod that i could see is adding a bias pot, and that is
because the current el34's are crap- the strong ones don't sound very well
and the good sounding ones don't hold up very well.

i would not even try putting nos mullards in my MG hiwatt, i am suspect
to the quality of the transformers (good transformers sound- well.....good,
great transformers sound good and withstand the test of time ) my
amp didn't do very well as far as proving it self to be tough

Re: Jimmy page hiwatt custom 50 & 100

I have a very early soundcity 50 plus noisey as they were with added master volume and original mullards as well as all trannys Partridge .it comes close to the high watt I tried at philly show 08 or better also have bone stock 120 head mullards all the way and that loves effects all the head room in the wourld through its original 4x12 bottom highwatts great sound city a second cousin but both are legend quality live use amps.as for page or any great guitarist I believe the tone come from the player through just about any amp unless you are a shredder player then you need the shred .

Real Hiwatts (e.g. DR103) are clean, warm, and VERY punchy, and whilst you can get a trebley sound from them, not bright like a Fender, a Vox, or even a Marshall in my opinion. Certainly not thin and cutting. They are as good at amplifying bass or keyboards as they are at amplifying guitar, just seem to take everything in their stride. When I sold my one ('69 DR103) the buyer was gobsmacked at how "new" it sounded, it hadn't really aged at all in almost 40 years. Didn't have so much as a scratchy sounding pot.

But like Dr HIWATT says, the last proper Hiwatts were made a long time ago, and what has come since isn't anything like Dave Reeves intended.

FWIW the JP mods look pretty straight forward to me, certainly quite inexpensive to do, and proper Hiwatts are really easy to work on. But if I had another DR103 I'd probably still leave it standard.

Ive had a bunch of HIWATTS over the years
my favorite was the custom 200 (for bass that is)
the custom 100 for guitar.
Has that great Pete Townsend sound,
i never had the cabs, i used marshall and
ampeg cabs, but are a great match with them

it wouldn't surprise me a bit - lack of quality control seems to be in
fashion these days, along with cheap parts and hefty price tags.
