Re: New Hard Drive New 64bit OS

Good luck. I'm actually on my old Win98/P2 system today because my main box freaked out on me. The hd has been giving me a whir-click thing for a while now, so I should have expected it.

Re: New Hard Drive New 64bit OS

no go on the 64bit, having too many problems with
devices that arent compatable.
But i already have 64 bit on my laptop and upgraded it
to Ultimate so its all good, and running killer on my laptop.

Really cant figure out the problem with my main system
could be the DVD player its two years old, everything
else is brand new top of the line.

I was able to copy my hardrive onto the new hard drive so at least
thats happening on my main system.

Re: New Hard Drive New 64bit OS

I've been running 64bit Linux for over a year now and it pissed me off to no end. A lot of software I've had to download the source code for and compile myself, because devs Can't be bothered to distribute 64bit binaries... And the closed source venders like Adobe (Flash) don't bother to keep 64bit shit up to date. Flash has NEVER worked right since I switched to 64... Firefox STOPPED working, can't get any video editors to work properly... Now my taskbar freezes up if I open the calender! I'm so annoyed with it but too lazy to reinstall 32bit ATM.

The most irritating part?? 64bit CPUs have been mainstream for what, like 10 fucking years now?? And nobody has figured the software out yet??

Re: New Hard Drive New 64bit OS

I don't know why I beat my head against the wall sometimes trying to get shit to work right on ANY Windows box. The mac guys may just be onto something.

Jason, I messed with Linux a few years back with a dual boot system and I just don't have the patience for command line stuff and forget compiling and binaries. I thought Linux and open source was going to CRUSH Microsoft but it hasn't happened.

I guess I'll be using Windows 7 and whatever else they come up with. For now it's 32 bit XP and Vista, and a RC version of 7.

Yeah, Linux can be really frustrating! Ubuntu has gotten to the point, though, where it's fairly plug and play with new systems. Unless you're wanting to do something more advanced/unusual it pretty much "just works" (aside from the 64bit version..). The biggest issues I ever had with the 32bit version was stuff like getting ancient hardware to run (like stuff that plugs into the parallel port mostly), and getting dual monitors to work properly.

I honestly don't think that Linux could continue to exist without MS and Apple doing the "consumer" thing. The burden created by millions of clueless users seeking technical support would be too much for the open source community to bear, I think. I'm just fine with it the way it is right now, and knowing that the Linux community would probably collapse if not for the "big guys", I won't ever bash them. I also really admire the completeness and technical superiority of some of Apple's products. The iPhone/iPod Touch are brilliant, as is the Macbook Air.

Re: New Hard Drive New 64bit OS

Linux/Unix is great (and preferable) as a server for business apps, but I just can't see its usefulness for clients, and home PCs.

agreed, ive never had problems with any windows except now my xp 32bit is outdated (it was an original pre-service pack1 copy, and it doesnt recognize all my ram or all myy HD space until i upgrade it with one of the service packs.)
Windows 7 cant seem to come soon enough.

I've heard that repeated a lot, but I don't really think it holds true anymore. Linux can be great even for an average use who just uses the web and email. Some of the more complicated issues like legacy hardware and dual monitors can sometimes be tricky though. Oh and if you're a hardcore gamer, you'll be very sad indeed.

And for a more advanced user like me, it's the perfect solution. Open source software has caught up in MOST areas. I used Photoshop for probably 15 years... I thought GIMP was a POS until I finally sat down and relearned everything. For what I do, it is just as powerful as PS ... and some tasks are actually quicker to do in GIMP. The only area where PS is really ahead is in the advanced print industry related tools.

On the vector graphics side, the Linux apps are just a hair behind Windows, but they are still capable of the same stuff... (just not as many cool tools as in Adobe and Corel products).

Video editing is a ways behind, admittedly. It's been a few months since I've tried, and I've heard that some apps have made progress. I'll have to check that out when I reinstall.

Yeah, the only problem with Apple stuff is the price tag. (well, and their products are designed to be disposable). I just can't afford their desktops or notebooks. Their technology and user experience are both utterly top-notch though. My wife and I love our iPod Touches. (but I also admit I've hacked them both... to get a little more usability out of them )
