Re: Peavey Triple XXX

They are a pretty damn nice sounding unit. I love the combos, but HAWT DAMN are they HEAVY to lug around. I've never felt a combo that was so heavy in my life. Including Twins and whatever else you can compare it to.

Wicked clean channel, and the high gain is very Triple Rec'ish, but nicer somehow.

All in all, one of my favorite Peavey amps.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX

It's not a combo though.. it's the head for 600.. which is a great price (assuming it's mint).. but my concern is what speakers to place it with (212 or 412).. the 4,8,16 ohms switching is nice (whatever that is lol)

Re: Peavey Triple XXX

I'd say pickup a cheap or beat up Marshall Cab, 8 ohm if you can. I find 8 ohms to be a good balance for guitar cabinets. Also Randall Cabs can be had cheaply, and really sound good with a high powered head.

I might buy a Triple XXX head this week too actually, if its affordable. I think the guy is asking 900, and it is mint. He has a combo and a head, and I really like the combo, but I can't lift the damn thing!

So I might take the head, just for something different to use in my band. Really has a nasty metal tone which might be fun for a while.

DUH!

Go with that. I have been dying to get an Avatar cab. You can get it with whatever speakers you want for fairly cheap new.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX

my only question is.. will the amp blow out the avatars? the amp is 120w

"
AVATAR ® G212H Speaker Cabinet.

It has two industry standard 12 inch 60 watt Celestion Vintage 30 guitar speakers in a closed back. This 120 watt closed back cab allows for more bass response and better control of the bass at higher volumes.

This cab is constructed of high quality 13 PLY voidless Baltic Birch plywood and has rabbet and dado interlocking side joints for extreme strength. "

from the ad.. does that mean 60w max per speaker and the peavey will blow it out?

Re: Peavey Triple XXX

Nah, that watts rating just means that at maximum performance thats all it can handle. If your ohms match so you don't blow your amp head, you'd have a hard time blowing that cabinet, especially since the head is the same output.

Even at full volume you'd be fine. You'd have a hard time blowing up a 120 watt cab with a 250 watt head even.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX

Lemme put it in terms easier to understand.... If you can handle being in the same room as a FULL CRANKED 120 watt tube amp, so can your speaker cab.

You're at its peak performance level then though, and it will wear out faster.

But I can guarantee you that you'll never play that loud. I'd bet my favorite Les Paul on it even, unless you book a gig at Madison Square Garden this week, and even then they'd tell you to turn it down probably.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX

I can buy an RH200 half stack right now for $250 at my local pawnshop. I just might.

Randall cabs should never be more expensive than Marshalls. Thats just crazy talk. I mean, I know a lot of them are built better, but Marshall is selling the name, that triples the price right there.

Makes sense hehe

I don't plan on putting it passed 2-3 for practicing and MAYBE 5-6 for the occasional gig.. I just don't understand how speakers, ohms and all these digerydoos work

Yea we have Randalls in our pawn shops all the time
for dirt cheep with the big 4x cabs. That is totaly crazy
that they would be more than Marshall, unless they are MG cabs.

Re: Peavey Triple XXX

if you want to push the cab to get power tube distortion and want to spin your electricity meter real fast driving a 100+ Watt head.....look for speakers with a really low sensitivity(1W at 1M).... a lot of guitar speakers, looking at the Eminence catalog, start at 89dB and from what I gather (correct me if I'm wrong) if you're using a 50 Watt and go from one speaker (say 89dB) to one with a sensitivity 3 dB higher (92) it's like driving the first speaker (89dB) with 100 Watts...assuming all else is equal.....

that's not saying it's twice as loud...more like just a bit louder....and from what I've been told, by a tech I trust, it takes 10 times the power to get twice the audible volume...so basically a 10 Watt amp is half as loud as a 100W amp through the same speakers and a 50 W amp is about 3dB quieter than a 100 watt am through the same speakers, or just perceivably quieter....

so what I'm saying is if you want power tube distortion out of a high power amp, without killing your hearing, look for speakers with a low sensitivity...and vice versa to make a Valve Jr. (5 Watts)scream use speakers with a high sensitivity (like my Eminence wizards 103.1 dB for the 16 ohm version I have)...or if you're a masochist use a high powered amp like my Peavey windsor with that 2x12 with the wizards and stop hearing the way you used to....

note: I only bought the wizards because they match the sensitivity of my single EV 15" cab....when I use the Windsor as a bass cab I want the sounds to be equally heard from both cabs....and it turns out they sound awesome for guitar and bass (with the 15" cab for bass)...sorry I sort of went on a little tangent here......

You probably won't quite hit 6.

But its always fun trying. haha

I think the Triple XXX has seperate volumes for each channel, so you can ride the master a little higher... but I think 6 is in the 'scary loud' territory. Get some ear plugs! Don't want you to go deaf bro!

Re: Peavey Triple XXX

I don't know if you are still lookin' for a Triple X but I have a mint Triple X 120 watt head and mid cab for sale. If you E-mail me I will privately give you the price, but I will tell you that it is a very good price and it is mint so it's like brand new. It's mint - I bought it like a year or two ago because I needed a rig for live shows when I was in my band. We recorded a demo in the studio, which I did not use my Triple X for - I used the studio amp to record - and we played like 2 or 3 shows before we broke up and it has been sitting in a dust-free and smoke-free environment since then. I play through it every once in a while just to warm it up and make sure the tubes are good and everything. Everything is all original on it, I never modded anything. If you play rock or metal and are looking for an amp rig I would definitely recommend the Triple X. My other guitarist in my band had the same setup as me and this amp screams dude.

I used an ESP with EMG-81 active pick-ups through it and it was insane and unlike the Mesa Rectifiers, this amp is actually versatile. Nothin' against the Rects, but they really can only play one thing.

Lemme' know if you are interested man.. my E-mail address is XBroken1@hotmail.com - I can take pics and send them to you if you want.. if you are interested send me an E-mail and I will give you my cell number and send you some pictures and whatever.

I love the Amp, but I'm not in a band anymore and I don't think I will be in a band again, at least not in the forseeable future. It's way too loud for me to just rev up and practice with and I also have a 50 watt Line 6 Spyder that I play through to practice and that works perfect for what I need - that's the only reason I'm even looking to sell it.

Just lemme' know man..
