Marshall 1959HW Handwired Plexi Head or Marshall 1987XL Vintage Series 50W Tube Head

Hello again,

I am starting to narrow down my options right now it is between these two Buy Marshall 1959HW Handwired Plexi Head | Tube Amp Heads | Musician's Friend or Buy Marshall 1987XL Vintage Series 50W Tube Head | Tube Amp Heads | Musician's Friend. Let me know your pick...I'm more for the 1959 Hand-wired Plexi Head myself.

Save yourself some money and buy a clone. Or build your own. Your paying big bucks for the name alone.

Probably not what you wanted to hear.

I'd go with the 1987, though both are going to be very loud. hope you have a place to play these at a resonable volume.

Metroamp Parts Store

That is the 100w plexi clone, they now will assemble it for $400 which is a very good deal and it WILL sound better than any new Marshall and at $1500 it is a no brainer. There are others out there as well.

I have a 100 watt pre-amp tube head but its defiantly not as loud as these babies but I really love the tones that come out of these amps.

I agree with going the clone route. Metro, Rockytop and Ceriatone clones are made and sound more like an old Marshall than Marshall's reissues. If it makes you feel better you can always throw a Marshall logo on the front of the headbox after.

Re: Marshall 1959HW Handwired Plexi Head or Marshall 1987XL Vintage Series 50W Tube H

I built the50w (link in my sig) and I wouldn't trade it for anything! And this is only through a single V30... I can only imagine how incredible it will sound later this week when my 4x12 with heritage "m" gets here! I would recommend them all the way, ceriatone is less expensive but the parts are slightly less quality and it probably still sounds better than the new Marshalls. Like stated above, you can always slap a Marshall logo on it if you want, but other than that it looks identical to a Marshall. If you go to Metropoulos Amplification - The best vintage Marshall plexi replicas in the world. and tool around on the forum there you will find a ton of info about them and they have a soundclip section as well. If you want you can make your own or like I said they just started to offer buit by Metro option to the kits and at $400 that is a steal considering they put about 20hrs into them and make sure it is done right the first time (more than what can be said for Marshall or any other mass production amp for that matter). Any more questions feel free to ask, you can ask around and search their forums as well. And there are others out there too if you decide to not go Marshall or Metro. No matter what you pick, I'm sure you will enjoy the classic rock vibe that oozes from a plexi!

Yep, I would go the clone route. I would also pick the 50 Watt version over the 100 Watt. In my experience, the stock 100 Watt JMP is too loud and too bright.

Last week a guy sold a brand new 1959 Hand Wired for
$1,100 on eBay.
I was so bumed i didnt have the money

I see nothing wrong with paying the extra for the Hand Wired
Marshall though, people are paying over 3 grand for Les Pauls

You can get a Ceriatone fully assembled hand-wired 18W Plexi for $604 delivered. Unless you need the 50 watts this would be a very nice amp.

Good point, Coldsteal. If that's what you really want, go for it. And between the two, I'd opt for the 50 watter myself.

The Marshall handwired 20 watter would be my first choice:

Re: Marshall 1959HW Handwired Plexi Head or Marshall 1987XL Vintage Series 50W Tube H

I used to own a few 100w 4-hole Marshalls back when I was gigging steadily. Not once did they ever make it to a club. Those amps were so ungodly loud, just one of them would've buried the band's 3,000w P.A. One of those rigs was a '94 purple Hendrix reissue stack that I got locally from Brett McCarron, who started and still runs the Marshall Arts website. For all practical purposes and intents, diming a 100w 4-hole Marshall through one or two 4x12's is useless in the real world. It is so fooking loud you can't even think. You could be standing next to your drummer pounding the shit out of a piccolo snare and you'd never know it.

Still, ain't nothing cooler.

Once again I've got a new selection ...Marshall 1962 Bluesbreaker Combo Amp, The Plexi's or JCM 800...this is really tough decision making.
