Peavey Classic 50 / 212

Well I took the plunge and picked up one of these today. I couldn't pass the price up so home it went (actually in the PU!). I had been looking at the Classic 30 but got a good deal on this one. I've played one before and I was pleased with sound I got out of it. It's a little heavier than what I wanted but I think I'll be pleased with it. I will start looking to see what mods are out there for the amp and start considering if I want to tweak or change something...

Those are nice amps. I actually like those better than the 30's...they have more balls and get louder.

Where's the pics?

Gotta get some up this weekend... unless I hijack some from the internet! I've played these before and actually really like the sound. Plenty loud for gigs and it sounds good at low volume also. I played one once that was hooked up to a 4X12 cab and it was loud! A little heavier than the 1X12 I was looking at but I use a dolly to move stuff around anyway... Gibsonblues...

Well, I had the 4 x 10 version.
They kinda copied the Fender Bassman/Blues DeVille on that.

That's right! I've never seen or played one of those but it must be pretty nice (and heavy!)... Gibsonblues...

Congrats.

I also picked up one of the Classic 50 amp a couple weeks ago, sounds great if you ever get a chance to crank it.

I had a chance to plug the LP into it when I got in this afternoon. I cranked her up a tad and it begin to make items in the room rattle I'm not too good with the settings yet. I was able to get some good AC/DC mojo going with it and I like the EL84's. I'm going to try for some good blues settings on the amp. I like the overdrive with both pre / post set around 9 ea. Re: Peavey Classic 50 / 212

Yea same lol, I had to put the volume back down cause things were rattling off the table.
I find the lead channel with just a light bit of the post knob around 4 gets some nice light OD tones.

The cleans are the best though, sounds great through my strat even though it's a Squier the single coils seem to work well.

I agree... I do like the clean channel quite a bit. My LPVM's burstbuckers sound nice and full on it. My Invader sounds really nice with the neck and middle pu's on this amp. I'm experimenting with the pre and post settings. Where are you running the pre for blues? I'm thinking of putting in an "on/off" switch for the fan though. So far I really like the amp. I've read that it handles pedals nicely. Later... Gibsonblues ...

Cool! I'm not certain what brand of tubes mine came with. I'll try and have a look again but it was hard to tell. Did you re-tube both the EL84's and 12AX7's? Sounds like there was a big difference! Thanks... Gibsonblues...

I did JJ's all through it. The 84's and the 12AX7'S. I am not a huge fan of EH tubes. I did try some old RCA's in the pre-amps and it soften the amp up. Which was nice but I like the agressive sound of the Classics so the JJ's went back in. I have the 410 version but I bypass the 10's and I run it into a Lopo 212 cab (V30's) or a Lopo 412 Signature cab with some Greenbacks and V30's in a X pattern. I am about to make it a head which well match my cabs.

Nice.. I've watched a few of your videos and saw some of the equipment you have! I'd like to have one of those Orange amps! I may try some of the JJ's s down the road. May even consider a cab or swapping out the stock 12's in the 50. The V30's are nice... Gibsonblues...

Nice Score man, I hope you are happy with it, Found a V 30 a friend just sold to the local second hand music store I deal with, but they are not interested in doing any trading right now , The V30 is a Class A amp, LOVE the tones Damn hard to believe this thing is a Crate !

Thanks... I went in to look again at the Classic 30 but ended up with a 50. I've listened to a V30 and thought it was a nice sounding amp! They didn't have any in the last time but I've seen them in the past. You need to pick up the V30 if they still have it, maybe they will deal now Now that I'm building up my equipment again, I gotta find some folks to jam and gig with. When you come down to play at Antone's, give me a shout Gibsonblues...

There ya go I've been looking at several combo tube amps over the last 4 to 5 months. I've found a Lone Star Special for just over a grand but it sold before I got back which was fine since I didn't need to spend that much. I looked at several Fenders and Peaveys. I went in to check out the Classic 30 and played around on the Classic 50 and ended up with that one. New and a low price to boot... didn't leave me much of a choice since I really like the tone and have always like 84's. Go get it if it is still there! I bought a Vox AD50VT a few months ago and like it but you just can't beat a valve amp in my book. Gibsonblues...

Re: Peavey Classic 50 / 212

^Me too!

Upgraded from a Vox ad30vt, very great amp and I got it at a great price too, but the modeling OD only went as far as recording, so I got a real tube amp.

As for those Crates I liked the V32 it was the other one I considered but once the price dropped on the Peavey the choice wasn't all that hard to make.

As for the Pre/Post settings you asked for I find the Pre at about 4 or 5 with my Squier gets a nice blues sound, it's just lightly overdriven but very nice.

Usually if I want more sustain (using the Les Paul) I put the Pre up to about 9 and the post around 4. I don't know if it's true but it seems that when putting the Pre higher than the Post, it compressed and sustained the overdrive more.

The versatility of the amp is amazing though, can't wait to get a good pedal for this.

I am going to start checking out a few pedals myself. I've got a few that were suggested so I'll start looking Same here... the price was very good so that made it easy for me. The Classic amps have been around for a while and seem to still be going strong. Basically a good workhorse amp that should last a long time. I agree with the pre and post settings. Keep me posted on what pedals you end up with... Gibsonblues...
