Marshall MG Series Opinions
Alrighty. I have heard good and bad things about the MG series. I Definately need a new amp, and the 30 Watter looks like a good one to me. I ahve played this and sever others in the same price range (250 -300) many times. Just to say off the bat I Don't like any of the Line 6's alright share stories and opinions of these amps tks and Happy (late) New YEar

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I think they get an unfair rep sometimes for being a tad overpriced for what they are simply because they have "Marshall" stuck on the front, but really, they're not any worse than any other lower end solid state amp. I'd never buy one, but if if I owned one already, I wouldn't... like, set fire to it or anything when I got a new amp.
Just my $0.02. |

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I own an MG50DFX. I have owned it for the past 3 years and brought with me to band rehearsal, home/bedroom practice and gigs. I have both good and bad opinions about it. For what it is and for the price i got it (used from a buddy), it was a no brainer for me to get it. If I were in your shoes, I would hold out for a nice tube amp somewhere in that price range. If you have $250-300 to spend on an amp, I'd suggest checking out the classifieds on here. Peavey makes affordable and loud tube amps at that price. What is your type of music? you use pedals?
The MG's overdrive (to me) just does not cut it. I only use the clean channel and the FX channel (chorus, flanger, delay). Its a solidstate so do not expect it to behave and sound exactly like the amps of your guitar heroes. But this i will say, it does have a "warmth" to it that i have not found in Fender or Peavey solid state amps.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
Although I treat this amp well, it has a problem of suddenly losing the sound without warning. I keep the back well ventilated and not obstruct the cooling fan, but its just like there are days it will act up and some days its just fine. Im not sure if thats a common problem with the MGs or just limited to mine.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
Shrillness. There's this thin shrill fizz that I can't seem to get rid of. At first, I tend to like to crunch, but as time goes by, I tend to notice that it still has it. Definitely loud though, and I like the fact that it comes in a closed-back cab. Attack seems more focused because of that.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
had a few of them and both had the same thing go wrong with it...the input jack is solderd to a P.C.board.so in time the weight of the cord plugged into the amp will loosen the PLASTIC covered jack, stripping out the nut,and shorting out the jack...I know alot of these do this, not just the marshalls, so be carefull and make sure the input jack is not covered in PLASTIC....the $240 to $300 is pretty high for a logo, and an amp thats not gonna hold up....but when it comes down to it, it is your money...and this is my personal experiance .

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I had a buddy of mine get the 30 watt and 50 watt (MC sent the wrong one). I sat down messed with both for quite some time, with a Strat and a my Les Paul. It is was really hard to get a decent sound out of it. I would stay away from those amps. I really don't like Line 6 amps either. I do recommend the Cube series. I have a 60 and it is a really nice amp. But all of this is opinion, but that is my 2 cents.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I have the MG100HDFX head & matching cab...since buying my first tube am I have barely used the Marshall. That being said...the MG is just way to buzzy to me...you can get a decnet sound out of it but you'll do some tweaking.
They are what they are...inexpensive Marshall's. As long as you don't get one of them hoping for more, you'll be fine. |

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I have tried them out, they are ok for what they do but definitely have some limits.
I still prefer and seek out the old Valvestate 100's, tube preamp/solid power amp, 3 channels so I can cover a lot of territory with it. I have both combos and 1/2 stack versions and have used both live and as studio amps for at least 12 years.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I bought the MG250DFX a few years ago as a practice amp because it has the headphone / line out feature. Good for when the wife doesn't want to hear me.
I used the headphones for practicing and the line out for recording. IMHO I was able to get some really nice tones from it. My playing is not very good but if you listen to a work in progress song of mine called Never Know, it was recorded with my VMLP through the MG250line out. You can hear it here SoundClick artist: blucas - ambient experimental guitar Also, if you haven't already, go to the Marshall web site and watch the video demos of the MG series. I'm not saying it's better than a tube amp because it's not. But for your price range in a SS amp, I would recommend the MG series. You should be able to find the 250, used for 300-400 on craigslist, ebay, etc. Good luck

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I had an MG30 for 2 days. I bought it mostly because of the Marshall name. Very thin sound and I was not able to get a tone I really liked. It may say Marshall on the front (which you are paying a premium for) but IMO is not worth a hill of beans. I took it back and bought a VOX AD30VT. If I had it to do again, I would have gone with my third choice for a bedroom/practice amp and bought the Peavey Valveking.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I used to own a MG100DFX; most of the good reviews you'll see are from people who haven't tried many other amps or been playing very long, cos I loved it when I started but as I got playing more amps I saw how weak the tone was and how annoying and fuzzy the overdrive was. It did however work very well, hardy any problems with it.
My current marshall (8100) is totally crap; it sounds so much better than the MG but it only works 10% of the time I use it. (Never buy an amp from ebay, lol) MVL.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
the mgs are pretty good guiatrs
one should of course not expect the sound of a REAL plexi or a jcm 800 sound from that thing-but no practicing amp does that!

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
while this now might be slightly off topic BUT.....
imho there hasn´t been a practice garde map that really sounds awesome for the environment it is designed for and where it is used. most practice amps sound terrible at the volumes you can use in your flat or something that doe sinvlude the mgs that sound decent cranked but are way too loud for using em in eg my apartment the vox ad series did come pretty close to the goal

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
worst amp on the market from a popular brand. if you want solid state, i suggest peavey. vox valvetronics is a great choice, too. i've bought two all tube combos since my ad50 (one hughes & kettner, one carvin) and i still go back to the vox.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I went head to head, MG50 vs AVT50XT. The set up was in my room, same guitar same volume/tone.
I compared both on the same clean and dirty, gain and tone, basically played through the MG, mirrored the settings on the AVT then compared. The MG sounded like a decent solid state, but the AVT had that added warmness through the valve preamp and you could mess with the crunch/distortion using the guitar volume and your attack on the strings. Not an 'all valve' I know, but it is a marked improvement on the MG.

No digital effects but you might consider one of these. Orange Crush
I liked it better than my AVT20 actually

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I have the MG50, was my first Marshall, thought it was bitchen when I tried it out.
After a year, it loses its luster, not the best in the world, but, I still use it. Never had any problems out of it though. |

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I have the MG100HDFX 1/2 stack. It pales by comparison to my JVM410 but the price was waaaay too good to pass up. ($350 CDN and he even helped me load it into my car ... lol) I farted around with it the first night and ... it sounded Marshall'ish, you could hear the fan when not playing, there was alot less low end and one of the channels was quite noticeably louder than the others. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming it as much as it sounds. You get what you pay for and it's not your typical UK made Marshall so ... It is good for a few things for me personally. The low end problem was helped by adding an EQ; it gave me the opportunity to blow the dust off my old Line 6 POD 2.0 and run it straight into the effects return. I have loud practice amp and lastly, I get to brag that I own 2 Marshall 1/2 stacks ... lol. It's pretty good if you don't have high expectations. I doubt I'd bring it on stage but if anyone was to ask me if they should buy one I'd say sure but get it used and save some dough to get a tube one later. Everyone's different though ...

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
WOW i completely forgot about this thread :P lol I just noticed it now. Well, I got the amp, and a Crybaby original Wah
![]() ![]() I'm very impressed with it. I'd played it instore for porbly about 15 hours total, so it was never a tone issue, so much as volume, and reliability. Thanks for all the posts.

Re: Marshall MG Series Opinions
I have the 100 watt head. I hate it very much is the short of it. But the whole story of it was I bought it because it said Marshall on it before I really tried out many other amps. So I got it home and it sounded all right, so I was a happy camper until.... about a week later I started playing some tube amps and was thinking I'm an idiot for buying this and not a tube amp. So I thought I'll just return it and reverse my bad move but noooooo. I came home and part of the Marshall logo had fallen off while I was away...WHAT?! So at that point I was flaming mad so I turned it on and started playing and while I was playing the volume cut in half and the tone started sounding even granier. So here I am today stuck with my $650 mistake... So please don't make the mistake I did and save yourself your sanity... I mean whatever amount of money you would have spent on this and just spend it on a tube amp.
