Crackling noise - new classic 50

I got a brand new classic 50 212 that is making a crackling noise, not loud but always there. It is present even when all the volumes are completely down, and does not get louder when they are turned up, just stays at a constant background level.

I took a look at the tubes and tapped them but this does make a noise or effect the crackle.

One thing I thought was odd, the preamp section has 1 electroharmonics 12ax7 and 2 JJ ecc83 tubes. Should they not all be one type especially in a brand new amp?

Re: Crackling noise - new classic 50

Does your C50 have a switch on the back for grounding? It's a little black rocker switch with a + and a - on it..try flipping that...if that doesn't work it could be a bad tube....

All the preamp tubes don't have to be the same(I have a Sovtek,tungsol and JJ83 in my 30 and I have a JJ83,tungsol and JJ83 in my 2 50's)

the power tubes have to be from a matched set though...

If you have a srare pre amp tube ,try swapping it out one by one to see if the popping stops..You can also try plugging the amp in another outlet if the first 2 suggestions don't work.

If you dont seat the tube into the socket right you will get crackling, all the tubes pins need good contact.Try lightly, lightly rolling the bottom of the tubes where the pins are to push them in a little so when you seat the tube the pins open up.Dirty sockets where the tubes go in is also sometimes a problem.Check your guitar chords for tight connections into everything.

Re: Crackling noise - new classic 50

Drudeboy, I've got the same amp. It sounds like you could have a bad tube with the crackling noise. Take the back off so you have access to the tube area. With the amp on and volume up a little, take a pencil and with the eraser end, gently tap each of the tubes and listen for any crackling. You can gently put enough pressure on the tube to move it some. Tapping the tube lightly with the eraser should give you a gentle thump sound on a good tube. Sometimes if it is a bad tube you will get the crackling noise while moving or gently tapping the tube. If you have a bad tube, this may help you find the culprit. You can use different preamp tubes but always matched pairs for your 4 power tubes. Good luck and the 50's are good sounding amps! Gibsonblues...

Ok cheers guys. I took the preamp valves out and reseated them in the sockets and it seems to have cured it. There was no noise or crackling when tapping them.

@slowhand- the uk model does not have a mains polarity switch, just 220/240v selector

Glad you were able to fix it. The Peavey Classics are great sounding amps. Let us know how you like yours.

Glad you got it worked out! My C50 is about to see its first gig (while owned by me, anyways) on Thursday. I'm sure it'll do well!
