Played the HT, own the SL5, and it's the SL5 by far.

I didn't like the sl5. I was very eager for it to arrive, but found it way too ordinary and extremely bright.

The DSL5 might be better than the SL5.

Yes - it is actually yet to be released even Marshall don't have any info or clips out but it looks very interesting.

I guess that it will probably be like the SL5 with a few more thing like the headphone out on the back. Anyway I guess that the sound would be the same more or less

Ugh!, another dud. The DSL15 is a Dud, where the DSL40 is a winner. Why make a DSL5, when you have the SL5 which runs complete circles around it.

How can you say that the SL5 runs complete circles around the DSL5 when the DSL5 hasn't even been released yet?

I think the SL5 kicks ass, one of the best low wattage combos I've ever played....

I really don't see the attraction in the HT series, If people like them then, good for them. They aren't for me.

Here's a guy doing some blues on his SL5, from over at the Marshall Roadhouse.

Hmmm.. your right, I may be jumping the gun. I am seeing that the DSL 5c has better features than the 15c, which is just weird to me that the 5c would be a better amp than the 15c, but that looks like it might be so. I love the SL5 with a larger cabinet and a 12" Vintage 30 speaker, where the larger cab gives the speaker more room to breath like my Blackheart has. That alone makes a big difference to me, especially compared to most bargin Marshall amps that have 10" crappy speakers. It will be interesting to see the price there going to put on it, which will probably be almost the same price as the 15c, since it looks to be a better choice for a smaller practice amp.

I will be very interested in trying one out, since it has a 5w/1w option and a headphone jack as well as an effects loop and it is 2 channel foot switchable. Definitely worth a look anyway.

Thanks for testing my resolve and making me look more into it, since I just assumed it was a lower watt DSL with less features than the 15c which is not really possible you would think. I am glad it has more and better options since I think the 15c is a dud.

One of the Marshall designers pretty much said it is better sounding than the other DSLs because they have listened to feedback about what people didn't like and fixed it on this one.

I can only speak for the HT-5R Head. It stinks. I tried one and returned it. Definitely not for me.

I was considering checking the DSL5 out when they were released but came across a used Fender '65 Princeton Reverb Reissue that was in pristine condition (it even still had the cardboard Fender information sheet on top of it) and that was on sale for only $650 so I jumped on that instead as I figured that was a great price for that amp.

The Blackstar HT5R sucks, but you can also do a lot better than the SL5. My advice: keep looking.

Re: Marshall SL5 vs blackstar HT5R!

I had an HT-5 combo and for a practice/living room amp it was outstanding. The ISF feature seemed to give quite a lot of different tonal options and reasonable volumes. The clean channel left a bit to be desired but I swapped the 12ax7 for a 12ay7 and if seemed to open up the clean channel a bit, more headroom, took more to break up. As you said it has a headphone jack and it also has a DI output so you can run it directly to a board, we're actually switching to HT-5's at my church for that reason. You can play it straight to the board in standby so the internal speaker is off. It actually sounds better like that in my opinion, providing you have a good sound system and a sound tech that knows what they're doing.

I sold mine because I wanted a better clean channel and I discovered that I love the fender clean sound and if I run an OD pedal in front of that it's perfect for me but if I were just looking for a practice amp or maybe something to jam with friends it would work. Being a fender fan though I'd probably go with a blues Jr or a Princeton, I'm actually thinking of selling my Blues Deluxe and my Vox AC4C1 and just getting a Princeton but whatever...

As for the SL5, I've never played one, it looked interesting but I have seen one in person, the DSL15 was disappointing though.

did you choose an amp btw?

assuming the sl5 sounds at least as good as the dsl15 AND you want it only for home jamming then i would go with the marshall.
the blackstar is packed with some amazing features and is a fantastic amp but when put side by side to a marshall it just seems to be missing something with its sound (to my ears). the marshall just feels to have a fuller, throatier sound.

on the other side if u want to record, want versatility. then the blackstar ht5 hands down (from reading the specs of SL5 AND without using it )
the emulated out is insane. the amp itself is not bad sounding by any measure. the clean channel takes pedals really nicely. it has an effects loop, but i use all my pedals in front of the preamp and it takes them really well!
the isf doesnt feel like it does everything the marketing claims it does IMO - it does change the sound. but claiming a perfect US sound is a stretch. it is fun to play with though and does make a difference.

featurewise for the SL5 i cant comment

Re: Marshall SL5 vs blackstar HT5R!

I have the SL5, I think I paid $699 when they first came out? For $849 I just picked up a used Mesa 5:25 Express Plus, for the extra $150 it blows the SL5 out of the water...at least in my opinion. The Mesa is actually more compact and a little lighter than the SL5. Of course there is no 1 watt setting, but there is a 15 and 25. A much more versatile amp. I'd look for a used Express if you want a killer small 5 watter.

Re: Marshall SL5 vs blackstar HT5R!

Here is my 2cents worth . . .

The Blackstar is not 100% valve clipping.
It is aided/helped with some diodes.
i.e not true all valve signal path.

AFAIK, the SL5 is indeed all valve clipping.
No solid state stuff in there.

. . . and to me, that matters.

So, on that ground alone, *I* will take the SL5.

Re: Marshall SL5 vs blackstar HT5R!

I had a ht-5h with a 4x12 cab that I loved. But I still think my little SL5 sounds way better to me. The clean channel is less stale in the sl5 IMHO. But I am a Marshall guy so I am probably biased. I do feel like I get more gain from the SL5 too. It cost me twice as much due to lack of a used market, but I would get the Marshall again.
