Pig HONKIN' Marshall...

...figured I'd give the newest LP,a '69 Custom, a little pickup balancing on the weekend and dug out the big cannon...it really needs a new extension cord,though...

Re: Pig HONKIN' Marshall...

That thing is a beast! The first picture is also very iconic.

The Major also looks very clean.

Is that a cat's (or raccoon's) tail in that second picture?

Why settle for 100 watts when you can have 200 watts?

Re: Pig HONKIN' Marshall...

Surprisingly it doesn't look too bad considering it was toured heavily in the early '70's.
the inspection tag says "one Canadian lead "and on the underside has written in pencil "call Joe Leg in Ottawa" along with a phone #.

It also has a fourth pre amp tube which looks as if it was added long time ago.Just swap an ECC83 for an 82 or 81 and it alters the sound noticeably.

F'in thing weighs a ton, too.I first heard this Marshall back in '71.Bought it locally off a guy who got it from the first(I think) owner. Not sure whether Lifeson owned it at one time or just used it.

This just arrived at my doorstep. Someone seems to be offering a free guitar tech cat.

Re: Pig HONKIN' Marshall...

I remember you telling me in a PM that Lifeson used it. I don't think I could bear the volume just to reach breakup -- even 30 watts is pretty loud right at the point of breakup (which is my favorite level of dirt).

It's deadly flat out,even with the guitar knobs at 2 & 1...

Paul Dickson of Bullrush owned it for a long time.Bullrush,Rush and Mahogany Rush used to travel together back in the day.Bullrush recorded a couple of albums and had some modest success.

Re: Pig HONKIN' Marshall...

Do your windows shake if you crank it? Some objects rattle a bit for me, but your volume has to be quite a bit more than mine.

I love taking my gear outside and playing with full volume. I can usually hear echoes from far off.

I broke a couple of lamps once and a few pictures came off the wall.Normally now,I just set the inputs at 3 and 1 and use the guitar knobs at about 5 & 3.5 or so.Plenty of honk even low.

It's not really suitable for a small room unless both inputs are just cracked open.

But it has that tone the newer Marshalls will never have.

I wish I could afford a set of NOS Gold Lions for it.

I'd like a Major someday. They should reissue the beast.

I thought you plugged in the Major. I could hear you in Calgary.

Re: Pig HONKIN' Marshall...

hey, you just never know when you're going to be playing on, say, a farm in New York state in front of, like, 500,000 people and they don't have a big PA.

I don't think I'd want front row tickets.

I have no idea where you live - but I suspect that if you dimed that beast and nailed an A-chord while I was sitting here in my living room, my bowels would move...

There is a video of a guy playing one
in a small room, its pretty wild
starts out pretty mild then goes into death volume

Ritchie Blackmore used to use them

Re: Pig HONKIN' Marshall...

Ooh, a Major. That thing can stun small animals at 50 feet, I'll bet.

Did the lights in all the other houses on your block dim out when you cranked it over?

I've only got a JMP 50, but it's enough to bark louder than all the other dogs around here.
