Boogie 50 cal

MESA BOOGIE .50 CALIBER 12" Combo EL84 Amp Amplifier - eBay (item 350107831193 end time Oct-16-08 21:18:00 PDT)

Bought this last night, gotta watch the beer + ebay thing. Anyhow, I always wanted a boogie but never had the bucks when I was a kid. Now I kinda have the bucks but have to watch the wife...although she generally is cool about my GAS.

Any thought on this model would be appreciated..

THX....Go Phillies!!

Re: Boogie 50 cal

I had a Mesa Heartbreaker. Best amp I've ever owned, bar none. I shoulda kept it. You won't be dissapointed.

Funny, I don't think Mesa gets the credit they deserve. They make phenominal amps.

Re: Boogie 50 cal

Is yours el84 or 6L6?

1 or 2 channel?

I had the 50 calibre +.

Typical Boogie - sounds great if you are great dialing in amps.

Otherwise......

The EL84 is is considered the better sounding one and is much rarer I believe. Congrats - you scored there.

Re: Boogie 50 cal

I gotta chime in on this 1. Right now I use a Simul-Class Boogie MrK III combo, and love it.

But my 1st Boogie was the 50 Cal. when they came out. Now, the suggested settings for my Mrk III totally sucked ass. I really had to tweak/ask around to find good settings for my Mrk III.... before I could see the Mrk III really do its` stuff.

But holy crap. The 50 Cal?? The actual suggested settings for the 50 Cal. nailed good sounds. I used a 1976 Fender Stratocaster with my 50 Cal. And it HAD THE tone.

If I had 1 today, I`d prolly get a Mesa V-Twin pedal (modded version) to use with the 50 Cal. That adds a few extra channels.... since the 50 only had 2. Great amp. I am really pushing a good friend of mine I jam with to grab a 50 Cal.

As well, I hear adding a closed back single 12 boogie cab REALLY opens up the sound. Fyi.

Re: Boogie 50 cal

Good Snag!

I used to have a 50 Cal+ (Plus) combo like that, and I also had the .50 Cal+ head before that. The .50 Cal+ are the same as that, except that they also have a 5-band EQ. They were great amps - glassy clean to full-on nasty as wanted.

Don't remember why I sold them. Must've been gassin' for something else...

Re: Boogie 50 cal

Congrats!

I've gotten two chances to play a boogie for an extended amount of time

the first time was a single rectifier solo head it was too high gain for my liking but I liked it! i thought it was the best amp i had ever played at the time

and the second time was a rectoverb head
it was amazing! best amp i have played through

Re: Boogie 50 cal

This guy just arrived, and it looks brand new. It is super loud, and sounds just awesome, that boogie breakup is just so rich. I always wanted one of these when I was young, they just seem a step above Marshall combos to me (personal preference). The one thing I noticed was that it really wants to feedback a lot, could this be a microphonic tue maybe, its not terrible but much more so than my other amps. Then again my other amps don't really breakup as much. Clean is very Fender chimey, impressive for a EL-84 based amp.

GO PHILS!!!

Re: Boogie 50 cal

Could be a tube. It might be your settings. Or proximity. I never had a feedback issue with mine. And, it is pretty easy to get great contolled feedback with this amp. Take a look at the tubes when they warm up, make sure none glow red. Orange is good. And, ya may wanna take it to a local Boogie tech for at least a once over to make sure all is good.

Re: Boogie 50 cal

Check the V1 tube, they tend to go microphonic on Boogies.
