Peavey Vypyr 30
Anyone have one of these? Looking to buy a new amp around the $200 or less range and from what I have watched and heard this is a pretty decent amp. Or is there something better with built in effects and such?

Re: Peavey Vypyr 30
I don't know about the Vypyr 30, but I would sift through this ebay search for some candidates. Then ask opinions here and do a search for particular amps on youtube to see how they sound. I would also ping the video author to see what they like about the amps.
tube amp | eBay Also Orange, Vox and Marshall have some tube amps for at or under $200. Try them here to get an idea of price and again I would ask opinions and check out youtube videos to hear how they sound. Orange Amplifiers Combo Amplifiers | Musician's Friend Marshall Combo Amplifiers | Musician's Friend Vox Combo Amplifiers | Musician's Friend Here's everything that Musician's Friend has at or under $200 - you can sort the column on the left for specific vendors Combo Amplifiers | Musician's Friend Good luck! |

Re: Peavey Vypyr 30
Sorry for the tube assumption, but the Musician's Friend link also has solid state amps as well. You'll find both in the link.
One more suggestion, if you're not 100% happy with the sound of an amp don't forget that a tube screamer pedal or any good fuzz/distortion/boost pedal can/will improve your sound. Hope this helps! |

Re: Peavey Vypyr 30
not everyone wants or needs a tube amp... the OP asked specifically about built in effects in an amp...
I have the vypyr 15, I wish I'd gotten the 30, but that 15 was a steal at the price I paid. imo modelling amps under $200 the top 2 are the vypyr 30 and the mustang 2 the mustang 2 has the fuse controls which is nice because that's how you can do some deep editing of settings... the vypyr's worst feature... it took me a long time to get used to the controls.. I still have to sit there and look and play around with it to get it to do what I want... they also have one knob completely mis labeled... it's labeled "post-gain" it has nothing to do with gain... it it the "level" of the channel... so that you can make sure one channel is not 10x as loud as the channel next to it... the vypyr is a fine modelling amp, but imo you really have to at least try the mustang... I found the vox and line 6 modelling amps to be "meh" although I wouldn't call it a true modelling amp(not a bad thing), the roland cube series is also a worthy candidate, has great cleans, and some effects.. if you don't care as much about built in effects, the vox pathfinder is just a solid little solid state amp, with reverb and tremolo... no modelling

Re: Peavey Vypyr 30
Thanks for the info first of all.
Secondly, I play just about everything, looking in the most part to get the tones of stuff like - Led Zeppelin, Robin Trower, Stevie Ray, Black Sabbath, Zakk Wylde, all the way to newer things and heavier metal.

Re: Peavey Vypyr 30
oh, if you like heavier stuff, you will love the vypyr...
the controls suck, but the 30 you get the sanpera 2 pedal capability and that makes it better... you don't get the deep editing the mustang has all of these sub-$500 modelling amps you will lose some reactiveness that a tube amp has... things like turning down volume or picking softer to reduce distortion... BUT, they actually sound better than people give them credit for, esp at bedroom volumes. sounds weird, but try the "deluxe" model with full gain on the dirty channel for sabbath... in no way did tony ever play on a fender, but that tweed muddiness sounds like the old recordings have fun!

Re: Peavey Vypyr 30
When I got back into playing I looked at several modeling amps as I was not planning on ever doing gigs, and don't really have the space for a boatload of pedals. The first one I tried was the Vox VT40+. I then swapped it out for a Vypyr 75. Here are my thoughts on them both...
The VT40+ has much clearer cleans than the Vypyr. The Vypyr cleans aren't bad, but the Vox ones were simply clearer. Conversely, the Vypyr's overdrive is warmer than the Vox...the VT40+ overdrive just sounded way too brittle for me. It may simply be due to the 10" speaker compared to the 12" one. The Vypyr controls are in the front, and the VT40+'s are on the top-rear of the amp. For some people this makes no difference. To me, having to constantly tip the Vox forward to see what I was doing became a real pain in the a**. That's the reason why I swapped it out for the Vypyr. In hindsight, I should have gotten the Vypyr 30. The 75 has way too much power for what I'll need it for. Granted, it sounds excellent, but I rarely get to crank it up to it's potential. Also, you'll want to note that every modeling amp has one issue or another. Some have to do with buzzing, some with firmware upgrade issues, some with noise gate hum, etc... Be sure to look over all the support forums to get a better idea of what potential issues you may run across, and weigh that against your level of comfort in having to deal with it. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Re: Peavey Vypyr 30
A friend of mine who has a band has both guitarists using Vypyrs... Those amps sound like total mud in the mix. I've seen them a few times, all with different sound guys - little difference. If you're playing at home it should be good though.
