PCB mounted tube holders long term reliability
I was wondering about the long term reliability of tube amps where the tube holders are PCB mounted. Will the heat damage them over time, or is it reasonable to expect many years of service where an amp is used for say a few hours a week?

Re: PCB mounted tube holders long term reliability
I have a 96 HRDLx with the tube sockets mounted to the PCB , but it has had long periods of inactivity. Generally speaking, tube sockets being mounted to the PCB is a sign of cost cutting, poor design, and low overall quality. That being said, a lot of major manufacturers do it. Basically it is a crap shoot, may run a long time, may crap out quickly, the odds are crapping out sooner than later. Even though I own one I would recommend avoiding it if you can.

Re: PCB mounted tube holders long term reliability
Although I'm notoriously old school a properly mounted PCB socket can work just fine.
Price point will be your clue.

Re: PCB mounted tube holders long term reliability
I was looking at something like a Fender Blues Junior III or Vox AC15C1, but am wondering about the long term reliability for amps in this range. MDF vs plywood cabinets doesn't really bother me since it will just be for home use, but of more concern is the internal components.

Re: PCB mounted tube holders long term reliability
I think it's fine if you're buying the amp at Guitar Center. But if it's a hand made amp they should be mounted on the chassis. Along with the pots.
