Fender Mustang I amp problems

I figured I would start a new thread even though i brought this up in my "what amp to buy" thread and wasnt getting responses.

Anyway I bought a Mustang I about a week ago and have been playing with my headphones on. With headphones on there are no problems, with headphones off here are the problems:

When I strum E and A separate on any fret the notes ring out perfectly fine. When strummed together there is almost a vibrationish muffled echo, the sound is hard to explain but sounds awful. I get this on any preset and if i raised the guitar volume or amp volume it was more apparent.

It happens on clean presets with no effects on or anything, so its not a delay or something. And the problem doesnt seem to happen on E B G, just D A E. And it happens on BOTH of my guitars, ibanez artcore and epiphone les paul

here is an audio clip:
mustang amp strings E & A by whitekeys26 on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

at first i hit E then i hit A, then i strum both together and you can hear the vibrationish bad noise i am talking about, the recording isnt the best but its all i have to record it on. Also at the end i just keep strumming a bit and you can hear it clear. this same noise happens on any and all presets

Re: Fender Mustang I amp problems

The fact that you don't get it over headphones pretty much rules out an electrical/circuit issue, leaving it likely to be mechanical.

It sounds like something is vibrating in the cab, or a speaker issue of some sort. You could either open it up and see if you can work out what's causing the vibration, or really as it's just brand new you can save yourself the trouble and just get it swapped for another.

Re: Fender Mustang I amp problems

So what you are going to need is:

Step 1
1 Zippo
1 Gallon of Gas

Step 2
Pour gas over amp, make sure to adminster proper and even across surface of amp. Furthermore, get some of that fuel straight into the jack. The mustang loves it.

Step 3
Light Zippo

Step 4
Burn the motherfvcker

Step 5
????

Step 6
PROFIT!

Oh, and that just sounds like a bad speaker coil.

Had that problem too. Other amp, but same issue.

Re: Fender Mustang I amp problems

so this isnt common with other fender mustang amps? thats what my main question was.

I am just not sure if I got a bad amp, or if they just arent great to begin with and to either exchange it for another or return it and buy a completely diff amp

so any other mustang users have this problem?

If you strum a couple of bar chords even at a lower volume and it sounds all flabby, then you may just have a bad speaker. Take it back to the store and compare to the one of the floor, or if you purchased it online, just have them exchange it. It sounds like the speaker has a tear, even just plucking the strings alone does not sound too good.

The only time mine get's fizzy is when the fuzz pedal is engaged in the effects, so I just make sure it is never used. I only use the compressor for my effects on the stomp box side of things, I let the amp models handle the gain.

Couple of my clips with the Mustang III.

Re: Fender Mustang I amp problems

i read some of those threads from the fender forum... it looks like some people had some electrical interference, while others had issues with the hardware. even if it is just electrical interference, if the amp doesn;t work in the part of your house where you want it to, then it is not worth the hastle. did you bring it back to wherever you got it?

i just picked up a mustang 1 yesterday, so far i really like it. when i have time later on today, i will see if i have the same issue you have. i was playing mostly with the headphones last night, and i didn;t notice any fuzz. i will tell you, there sure are a lot of wires involved with this thing. it was a nice night, so i went on the back deck and was tangled in chords. i had a power chord for the amp, a power chord for the laptop, the guitar cable, the usb cable and headphones. i was shocked that i didn;t knock over my beer when moving everything around. now i think i will need one more cable... i wonder if i can conect the speaker out of my laptop to the aux in on the amp so i can listen to both the amp and lessons on justinguitar.com through the head phones.

i hope you figure everything out... this really seems like a great amp for us beginners who want a cheap way to play with all of the effects.

so i took it back to GC and while they were processing the exchange I messed around with the mustang i on display and in no way shape or form could i duplicate the noise. the guy asked me what was wrong with mine i tried to explain it to him, so he took it out of the box and tested it out and knew something was wrong right away.

they were great swapped it with a brand new one and let me test it at the store to make sure everything was good. when i got home i wanted to do more testing so i noticed i almost got a similar reaction when turned to the amber, red, and green 59 bassman settings. i hooked it up to fuse and noticed it was the gain set at 9 which was causing it, i lowered it down to 6 and it goes away completely. This is not the issue i had with my first amp, but it was causing a slightly similar irritating noise (to me)

but this mustang is amazing

The presets that already come setup with the amp, most are not so good. I would hook it up to your computer and use the fuse software to download some or make your own presets. The Fuzz stomp box is just awful and makes this fizzy sound where you might think the amp has gone bad, but you take that Fuzz box out of the equation and it sounds just fine.

the fuzz seems to sound okay on the mustang i, i am a fuzz fan, you just have to tweak the settings in fuse and you can hit a sweet spot with it
