Re: Amplifier Row
Herbie,
I used the JM250 for years playing gigs and I still use the JM150 combo as a rehearsal amp. The amps are basically identical and I have the same patches loaded in them. They do clean modeling extraordinarily well and the effects are sweet. They fall short with the distortion modeling - they have a bit of fizz and icepick going on. I used my Axe FX rack rig in my last band, and it blows the Johnsons out of the water. In their day, they were the best modeling amps made, and I got a lot of miles from them. I still use them from time to time, but not for gigs. |

Re: Amplifier Row
It's an original '62 Bassman that is more or less on permanent loan to me from a good friend. It sounds great - really rich and warm cleans.

Re: Amplifier Row
I kinda feel the same way with the distorted sounds. I find turning down the distortion helps. It is the lesser of two evils with pure tube amps you have a lot of maintenance with the tubes, need to push them to get the best tones, and a limited in the tones they provide. With modelers the distortion is not as nice but less maintenance and more flexibility. And of when you are playing in a band setting it is harder to hear the difference. Thanks for your insight. Have you run it clean with a distortion pedal?

Re: Amplifier Row
David,
It's a straight up modeler. I run it stereo into the Mesa 4x12, which is loaded with V30's. The clean models on the amp sound amazing (does a mean Twin and JC120), and the effects are killer. The distorted models are not so great, but are passable. The amp also has stereo low Z outputs you can use to record or run straight into the board. You run the amp from a foot controller. I haven't played a gig with it in a while, but it's a neat amp to have around "just in case". I bought the amp in 2000 and gigged the hell out of it for years. I also own its little brother, the JM150 combo, which I have identical patches loaded into. In its day, the Johnson was the Big Daddy of modelers. |

Re: Amplifier Row
I have a jm60 with the additional cabinet. It is my main amp because of its versatility. The distortion is solid (not awesome but also not so bad you can't work with it) the cleans are amazing. I have used a tube screamer with it with good results.

Re: Amplifier Row
Yes, I know I am posting on a year old thread.
With that being said, I just wanted to brag on how I found a Johnson JM250 head and a J12 foot controller for $150 used in perfect working condition this weekend. I got lucky the guy did not check eBay to see what they sell for normally. The cleans are really good. I thought the effects were very good and flowing. Its not a Ax FX but this is no where near that price range either. I found that you can get a pretty solid metal tone with the Recto mode but I am still trying to dial in my tones I want. I still have not figured out how to get the effects to be controlled on the J12 pedal. I wanted to add a flanger effect and be able to turn it on and off from one of the effect a,b,c,d switches but have not been successful. I was going to resell it for a profit but found I like it to much now.

I got a lot miles and many, many gigs out of my Johnson amps and they're still going strong. Do you have the owner's manual? Here's a link to it if you don't: http://www.johnson-amp.com/pdf/JM250manual.pdf |
