There is one selling on craigslist for $400. Should I buy it? I can't seem to find a lot of information about these amps? Can you guys give me some info on the amp?

I play the Vox AC100CPH Head version at my local music store and that I believe they were asking $500 to $600

Re: Vox AC50CP

Good amps, iffy cosmetics, bad marketing on Vox's part.

Lousy reverb but you can put in a Belton tank for about $25.

Re: Vox AC50CP

The knock that I have seen on line is that fat switch tends to make the amp sound muddy.

Have to agree with you . . . they tried to sell it as a High-Gain Moneser.

And maybe for them it was a high gain unit, compared to all their other oferrings, but what it is, (to my ears) is the PERFECT hard rock amp.

I would buy one for $400.00 without even thinking

Best used price i ever seen over here was $900.00. For the 100W model.

Re: Vox AC50CP

So, Im currently trying to choose from two amps. This Vox for $400 or a Twin Reverb from the mid-70s for $475. Which one should I choose?

Re: Vox AC50CP

Twin from the mid-70s isn't very specific. Fender changed around all their circuits a ton from, well, forever ago onward. Some details about the Twin would be nice.

Also, keep in mind, if it's a traditional Fender Twin, it's super super loud (80 watts tube!) in all likelihood twice as loud as the AC50 when cranked, and way too loud to ever crank at home for that matter.

Also, regarding the volume, you'll get virtually no natural breakup unless you're at very, very high volumes. This could be either good or bad, depending on what you want.

Re: Vox AC50CP

I've played a ac50 head for some time.
Prefer this amp with single coils actually. Took me a while to get a nice tone with my les paul. So I'd say Twin !
(Not that I'm not a Vox fan, cause I am! but ac30/ac15 )

Re: Vox AC50CP

The Twin isn't twice as loud as the 50W Vox. 3dB louder.

Totally different amps with different features that suit different playing styles.

One consideration is the Twin will maintain its value or go up while the Vox's value will decline.
Phildog and Strato like this.

Re: Vox AC50CP

Okay, so not twice as loud, but a Twin is noticeably louder, and really freaking loud regardless.

Also, Lyle brings up a solid point in that the Twin, if you don't destroy it, will retain, even increase in value over time, while the Vox will deteriorate (at least until it's really, really old, but we'll all probably be dead by then)

Listen to Lyle, he's the authority on amps around these parts

Re: Vox AC50CP

I would get wayyy more usage out of the AC50, but that is me, for my music.

Re: Vox AC50CP

The Vox has that nice chimey clean, not the fender clean. The Vox has a lot nicer gain than the Fender Twin.

If you play mostly clean and want the spanky nice fender clean for most of your music, then the Fender. If you play mostly gain stuff, then I would do the Vox all the way, since the fender gain is not so good compared to the Vox. You still have nice clean on the Vox, but it is not that nice Fender clean, but still a nice chimey clean and I do like the Vox clean very much.

Re: Vox AC50CP

I'll probably get the twin because I mainly play clean. And just buy a ts-9. Thanks for the advice guys.

Re: Vox AC50CP

Gotta say, that Vox looks pretty sweet. But then, I've never been much of a Fender amp guy as I generally prefer my 'cleans' a little ragged around the edge.

OK I am going to bump this amp and asking Lyle what reverb tank model and numbers do you recommend for the Vox AC 100 CPH Head?
