Re: Who makes the best current production EL84??

i know al lot of people like
jj's
electro harmonix
Current Mullard's
Genalex Gold Lion....

Personally, I would say, spend the extra and get a nice used set if Amperex Holland, you will never hear your amp sound better IMO>

JJs are consistent. My mate Who is a tube dealer sends back 1 in 100. Electro harmonix are 1 in 20.

You got that right. I had a set of EH's and they were ok....then I put the Sittard factory Hollands in......oh my.
I have a set of Blackburn Mullards too, and the Amperex Holland blow those away.

Re: Who makes the best current production EL84??

JJ are consistent and reliable, but I don't particularly like the sound of them. I have had reliability problems with EH and Sovtek (and NOS JAN Phillips for that matter...), and they really aren't great sounding (the JAN PHillips are though...). I'm quite intrigued by the Mullard "reissues" - seems almost like sacrilege somehow. Anyone compared them with original Mullards?

I haven't compared them directly, but what I have heard is that they can be muddy sounding, and have a very low headroom, lower than most EL84's. I guess if your amp or guitar is on the bright side, and you want an early break up, you may like them. Other people that have put them head to head with the originals say that they are not even close...don't even have any of the same character. The new production Mullards are kind of expensive too, otherwise I would have bought some just to put them head to head with the originals that I have.

yup... Sittard Hollands are fantastic, I actually prefer the Sittards over Heerlen Hollands.. I have never been so wowed in my life either. The 1950's "D" Getter from Sittard or Heerlen Holland, OMG.... yet to be duplicated IMO...

Re: Who makes the best current production EL84??

New production I like JJs. I do have a couple of sets of old glass, 1 from GE & 1 from Mullard. The Mullards are currently in daily use in my Crate. My Mesa is running a set of the JJs because of the fixed bias.

Re: Who makes the best current production EL84??

First, it depends on the amp. JJs are very good in Vox style circuits. EHs may be a better choice for a Marshall style circuit. Depends on the speakers, too - if you are playing through Celestion 75s or something equally crappy then spending money on tubes won't improve things a bit. Fix the weakest links first.

A good set of NOS tubes will often sound better. The advice I give clients is this: if you are regularly gigging the amp, use new production tubes. No one will hear the difference once the high hats come in and you won't blow $300 of tubes on a crowd that could care less. If you are primarily recording, or just playing at home and want "the best" then sure, spend for the NOS goodness.

Thats what mine are, the "D" getter. Incredible. I will probably cry when they start to fizzle. I haven't seen any for a while.

I didn't pay that for them...I didn't even pay $100 for them. Same with my Amperex EL84s. I had a very good tube connection.

well, your looking in all the wrong places then. If you know what to look for you can get amperex or mullards for under $20 a pop any day. Luckily I don't pay for 99% of my tubes, but for instance, I recently got a amperex holland pair of 6bq5 for $6.00... juts learn how to identify them...(tip, the label means nothing)

Yup, I think My Mullards cost me $25 for the pair, My Amperex Hollands were I think $35 for the pair. Not that much more than new production, and a hell of a lot better.

That is probably just a Chinese rebranded tube, or a Russian rebrand. If it is the Russian, I had a set of the Sovtech EL84's that were terrible. It's like sand paper for tour ears.

When they get older, do you get a lot of sag?

Actually, its what makes valve amps great. We don't just all like different amps, we like different tubes in those amps!

If you look at the top of the tube there is an "X" across the top of the glass. There are codes as well that are etched into the glass. There is info on the Amperex and Mullard codes on Brent Jessee's site here. Mullard, Philips, and Valvo Tube Codes

They are confusing, but I have figured it out...it took a while.
