ECC83, who has the best?

my current amp is a Marshall VS100, it has 1 ECC83 in the preamp, I am looking at changing it out since it has been in there forever (since 1997).
who makes the best ones?

I have an Engle tube preamp that needs new ones as well so I figure I might as well get them all now.

Re: ECC83, who has the best?

^ JJ IMO or mullard NOS if ya can find any resonable. IMO the new reissue mullard are not any better than the JJs. just cost more. Do you know of this vendor www.kcanostubes.com good place.

I shop at www.thetubestore.com only because I am in Canada

All depends on what flavour you want.
Don't worry, I am going through the same crisis myself at the moment.

Re: ECC83, who has the best?

I read awhile back that modern designs were built around current production tubes so putting NOS tubes might be a waste of money.

I used to use GT's for preamp tubes in my 2204s, but it has been over 15 years since I last bought tubes.

Re: ECC83, who has the best?

JJ's have nice gain but are kind of dark sounding (good to mellow out bright amps). Shuguang makes a good sounding 12ax7 and they are cheap and reliable.
I would stay away from EI Yugo 12ax7's, they are prone to being microphonic, though they do have nice tone.

If I do use a NOS preamp tube like an old Mullard, I'll put it in the V1 position and use new production tubes in the other positions.

Re: ECC83, who has the best?

If you have the cash a NOS Tesla Ecc83 would probably sound great in there.

If you can find one it might be 100-300 dollars.

Did you know that the JJ ECC83 is built to the
exact specs as the Tesla ECC83?

Re: ECC83, who has the best?

I didnt know that Coldsteal.

I need a couple of tubes to try in my Roadster, maybe I'll try a couple of JJs. If I dont like them they would make good spares.

Do you know what an alternate to a Mullard 12at7/CV4024 would be out of curiousity?

A buddy keeps telling me to put a Tesla in my V1 and a Mullard in the V2 and V3 slots.

You mean what JJ ? that would be an ECC81......... also I find the Electro Harmonics 12aT7wc to be a very good new production tube.

Re: ECC83, who has the best?

Well, I'm new here, don't want to butt in, but JJ's have been my tube of choice for a couple of years. They sound OK, they don't fail (often), and they're not expensive. And nowadays, NOS tubes are too easy to fake.
