thoughts on Marshall VM?

any one have any opinions on these? i have about zero experience with Marshalls (and tube amps in general), but i have one (2266 combo) coming tomorrow because the price was right. are they easy to dial in a good sound?

i am totally psyched.

Re: thoughts on Marshall VM?

They sound best with the MV above 12 o'clock. Everything else is to taste. I always start dialing mine in to whatever room I'm gigging by setting everything to 12 o'clock (except the reverb). The "Body" knob usually ends up a little lower than the "Detail" knob. I never use the reverb, I use delay in the loop.

I usually stay in "Low Dynamic" range with the mid boost off, too, unless I'm without my pedalboard, then its "High Dynamic" range & I control everything with my guitar's volume knob.

Oh, btw, I have the 2466 head.

Re: thoughts on Marshall VM?

PURPLE POWER!!!!!!!!
Best sounding Marshall for Tone thats come out since
the Plexi,
They are tricky to setup if you arent used
to them think of Detail as treble preamp and Body
as bass preamp kind of like chanel one and two
on a plexi.

the main thing to remember is not turn up the
Body preamp to far or it will fart out on you but
the detail preamp can be cranked all the way.

Go to this thread at the Vintage Modern forum for
a lot of peoples Personal favorite Settings
Marshall Vintage Modern :: About time for a favourite settings sticky...

Here is one of my favorite settings
Sweet spot (at least for me with my Les Paul and G12H Heritiage Greenbacks)
For strat, a little more bass

M Vol 2-(to what ever you need it to)
Presence 4
Bass 6
mids 6
treble 5

Dyn 0ff.......(on for leads) ..........NOTE:if you want to use OD pedals use the Dynamic boost off
Mid boost off

Detail 8-9
Body 5-6

Of course i have the Head and 1960A cab but i believe the Combo would
use the same settings

.

Re: thoughts on Marshall VM?

know what you mean. cash is a bit tough for me b/c my lunatic wife may see the bank statement. where as the CC bills come to my office (and so does UPS) so she'll never know about the gas. Then I wait for her to fall asleep and bring it into the house.

come to think of it i need another amp or geetar like i need another wife but the gear is so good i cant resist

all to sit in the celler and twang away to CD's lol

Re: thoughts on Marshall VM?

well, it's here! the dream of a Gibson Les Paul Standard and a (real, all tube)) Marshall has been realized.

after only a few minutes of playing, I have realized this amp is not plug and play. I suppose patience is the key with this amp, right? and of course, i have none of it. but if you guys (here and elsewhere) say this amp is great, then I'll stick it out.

Wish me luck!

Re: thoughts on Marshall VM?

Welcome to the Fraternity of the Purple Light!

Yea they take about 5 minutes to warm up
thats the KT66's its also the secret to thier sound

Just remember not to turn the "Body" up too far or it just sounds funny
but you can crank the Detail as far as you want

Re: thoughts on Marshall VM?

thanks coldsteal. i'll be asking you for your insight as i mess with this amp, assuming that's ok with you. i'm been trying out some of the other settings on that sticky you posted- seeing what happens.

Thanks again.

Re: thoughts on Marshall VM?

Yea they really know thier VM amps over at that
forum, and of course the Engineer that invented
and designed the Amp Steve D from Marshall
frequents the site if you have questions on the tech side.
Great community over there. all great guys.

PS if you use stomp boxes, use them with the
Dyanmic Boost off for the best results especialy if
you are using an OD or distortion box.
Also there is a setting in the Loop for using Stomp Effects
you know like phase, chorus, echo I put most of my
effects through the loop with the -DB pushed in.

Also you CAN turn the body up all theh way if you have
both the Dynamic Boost AND Mid Boost on

One thing i always notice is after about 10 minutes when
everything is nice and warmed up then they really sound good
