Re: Phaez Amps [merged]
I've never been one to notice big differences by changing tubes, but I had some spare Sovtek EL84s though and I figured what the hell and replaced the stock tubes on the Jericho. The stock tubes must be garbage because the difference in tone was amazing. I had twice as much clarity as before, the harmonics rang out more and it was easy to dial in that dirty grit tone that I like so much. I don't expect do get good tubes with an amp, especially one of this caliber, at this price. I was surprised that the preamp tubes were JJs. I just wanted to point out the difference in tone you get when the power tubes are changed, even if they are replaced with mediocre tubes.
BTW, I was playing out in the garage today with the door open. I had the gain at about noon and the master at about 9:00. The wife went for a walk and said she could still hear it when she got to the neighbor's barn, easily a thousand feet from where I was. For 18 watts, this amp plays loud and clear. Every time I play through it, I'm able to tweak it and get different sounds. Time to get started on a speaker cab. Haven't decided whether it'll be 112 or 212 yet. |

Re: Phaez Amps [merged]
Phaez Rhyno coming soon. Randy sent me a photo over the weekend. Anticipation is killing me but it'll be worth the wait. Kept the BF simple. There's an added volume for the sibly channel on the rear to help fine tune the volume of the Sibly ch to match the BF ch. I'm thinking it should be nice to have very clean with the BF and slightly pushed to all out on the Sibly with the volume knob. Effects loop and full compliment output including a slave out on rear as well.
I'm having Jim make my cab. I like his build quality first and foremost but I also wanted this particular Phaez to be an all Canadian affair. The thought of Randy driving up to Jim's house to pick up the cab intrigued me. Phaezland. I think it's a cool thing having an old buddy involved. Almost like Batman and Alfred. Re: Phaez Amps [merged]
I received mine yesterday. I put them in but only had a few minutes with them. Initial impression is that the old glass is a little more harmonically rich and a little less aggressive sounding than the Tung Sol & JJ combination I had in place. Not a night and day difference in my JTM-18, but a nice little upgrade. I have some Amperex Holland EL84's coming soon, looking forward to seeing how that effects my tone as well.

I am a big fan of Amperex el84's. I had them in my lightning cutter and it made a significant change in the tone on my lightning cutter when kranked. If made the top end el84 chime/bell more pronounced when the amp was kranked and noticably smoother overall. Great el84's. I tried a lot of NOS el84's from telefunkens, sylvania etc and the Amperex were the real standouts. |
