Orion's still running JJs. I've run it through it's courses, and am about ready to see what it can do with some good old glass. Moved a couple things out recently, so I'm not totally broke either, which helps...

Remind us, what's the speaker there? Speaking of speakers, one thing I've found, at least with my DC, is that it takes to different speakers really incredibly well. Most times when I try a speaker with any given amp I immediately know if it's gonna work, and most of the time the answer is "hell no." Every time I try the DC with a different speaker(s) it sounds totally different, but I rarely get that feeling of "hell no."* It's just different. Still sounds great. Just messed around a little yesterday, plugging it into every speaker I have here, and there was only one "miss." Everything else sounded pretty good, though obviously different. The odd winner, which I wasn't suspecting, was the Silver Bell. Can't believe I never tried it before. The 10A100 still wins for aggressiveness, and immediacy, and sharpness, but I liked the fuller, thicker Silver Bell a bit more. Huh. Learn something new every day. *Though it has happened. To my ears, the Blue Dog alone was freaking awful, the ceramic Blue Pup I used to have infinitely worse...

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
Well I've watched this and other Phaez threads and listened to all the hype.
Now I'll find out for myself. I just scored a used Phaez Daisycutter 14watt from a fellow MLPF'er! Should have it by mid next week. Can't wait! |

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
The Blues Junior cab has a WGS ET65 in it. And the DC runs through that for now. At some point a Sourmash 2x12 1960 style will provide a more appropriate companionship for the amp. Still researching speakers. Most likely a m/h75 pair from Scumback.
BTW, sound in the demo is recorded with a Superlux PRA628 microphone, and from a mixer going to the mic input of my video camera. It's the best I can do for now. Quote:

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
There's a little place here in St. Louis that has a back wall full of used and NOS tubes. I think I'm going to have to go pay them a visit soon. I have a handful of old 12ax7s but no el84s.

And here's one more. I tried to play with the touch response of the amp in this one.

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
I noticed that your TBM controls were all up very high. Playing through my swamp-ash schecter and my 1x12 (Eminence Texas Heat), I typically turn down the treble to 9 o'clock; otherwise it is too bright for me.

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
blues.junior inspired me to hook my DC-10 to the speaker in my Fender Blues Junior amp, and wonder of wonders, it sounds MUCH better than it does through my Avatar cab with 2x12 Eminence GB1216s. There is so much bass through my Avatar cab that is sounds like I am getting bass distortion at almost every level. I am going to experiment with some smaller coupling caps as soon as they come in. In the mean time, I think I might try switching out my closed back for the open back to my Avatar cab and see if that helps.

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
Have you tried putting some insulation in your Avatar cab? Might tighten up the bass response a bit.

That, and the fact that the sound recorded in the clips is EQd by the mixer I am using to preamp the mic.

Re: NAD: Phaez HRM Daze
I was playing this again last night, and I don't think their is a ceiling on the headroom on the clean channel of this amp, as loud as I want to play, clean, slear singing tones until the cows come home. Me likey.

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
After stalking this and other Phaez threads for a while I decided that it was time to get my own. I missed out on a couple of DC's in the classified so I sent Randy an email and put my deposit in for a Jericho! Until I can get mine I'll just have to keep listening to everyone else's demo's so keep them coming!

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
I'm planning on finishing mounting the DC10 in the Sourmash head shell this weekend, anybody aware of the screw size/thread specs on that chassis?
Thanks in advance.

re: Phaez Amps [merged]
It's not on the web site. It's the JTM18. There are some excellent demo's on this forum by Rockinghorse and Singlecut - do a search on Phaez. They demo the JTM18, which has been renamed Jericho. If you want that amp with an effects loop, it's called a Jackel. I have a Jackel on order. Randy will eventually answer your email. Make sure you've asked him what kind of sound you're after. He'll give you great advice on which amp model he makes fits your needs and quote you the price.

Huh? I just thought it was funny that the names were Jericho and Jackal - both WWE wrestlers, and both from Winnipeg MB strangely enough....
