Re: Phaez Daisycutter DC10 kit build

Fired up the DC10 with a couple of different power tubes, first an EL34 and then a 6V6. Had the amp mated with a single 12" Eminence Texas Heat in an open-back combo cabinet (my Allen). Played through my two guitars (see my sig). The Schecter has 'monster coil' single coils with a coil tap; the Ltd has two standard HBs.

Here are some initial impressions; keep in mind this is the very first time I have heard a Phaez amp live, let alone played one. I was surprised in many ways. First off, this thing is surprisingly loud. It was difficult to turn up the master beyond 9 o'clock when the gain was also up (in my typical home/basement setting).

I immediately bonded with the clean sounds, which were very full sounding. I was quite surprised by the touch sensitivity. With the gain up at around 9 or 10 o'clock, I could go from clean to hairy just by changing my pick attack. Going from tapped to non-tapped PUPs opened up the range even more, of course.

The overdrive was also surprisingly rich in harmonics. I haven't experienced anything like this before, actually. I'm not sure it suits my tastes, but I'm eager to try the amp with different speakers and hopefully get the MV turned up beyond 2 with the gain up.

Re: Phaez Daisycutter DC10 kit build

Congrats on a successful build! I hear you about the volume, it took me by surprise too.
What tube did you prefer, I tried the same two as you and preferred the EL34. It sounded like it was being held back with the 6V6, though I'd still like to try a nice old one.

re: Phaez Amps [merged]

Perhaps 2 different phaez amps with a/b switch would give u the different tones u require. Am considering it.

Re: Phaez Daisycutter DC10 kit build

That is usually the first thing everyone notices, the volume. It's a real ear opener. They are very harmonically rich, and I have found through my experience that the chinese preamp tubes don't suit my tastes. If you are running the chinese tubes, then try some JJ's or some vintage tubes. That will smooth out the gain, and it won't be so messy when playing chords. With a nice set of preamp tubes, my amp is very nice in OD department. The DC does have a lot of gain too, and will smooth out with more volume from the power section. But yeah, LOUD.

IT was a new Warmoth neck ..just needed to be fitted and shimmed to line up the dots on the bridge ...the screw holes needed to be realigned ,other than that it worked out good ...the old neck had a small twist it was 30 years old, this is go to guitar..there was a few players in the band that I did some guitar work ,replacing pickups, necks and new anchor post for the floyd rose....I have built a new guitar for Randy ,,he gave me the parts ,swamp ash body ,new neck and machine parts ...I finished the raw body and assembled all the parts ..it turned out great....It seams odd for a Person to do work on Guitars when I never played or know how ...they are just mechanical devices to me ....And if thats not odd enough ..I don't play golf but I designed a driver and a new style putter that is sold on the market , built it for a friend who sold them....JIM

That's my favorite "Phaez" font too. IMO, that should be the logo.

I really like the Ash cab. When I saw it on the 6v6 Sibly clip on Youtube I knew that was what I wanted. It makes it more unique kind of like the Trainwreck's. It shipped today so I can't wait to try it out.

Hey Kingedb! I just noticed you're in Lansdale, I work about 15 min down the road from you in Souderton, when I get my amp we'll have to get together and jam!

re: Phaez Amps [merged]

Oh man, you're in Souderton!?!? I really am right down the road. My grandparents live in Souderton.

I will DEFINITELY down for that! I can even bring a few toys myself. My "MLP Collection" : A Phaez MLP/35, and 8 watt Daisycutter and even a Rist Tele. Maybe by the time you get your beauty and we set it up I'll have my 3rd Phaez in it's cab. It's a Blackface/Tweed style 3 watter. It's in the basement, sadly sitting it it's box. (Sorry Randy!!)

I wish I would have known you were that close. I could have let you sample a couple Phaez's before you made your decision. Though I KNOW you were set on the amp you ordered.

Lol, I am dead set on that amp, but who knows what the future holds for phaez #2...

I'm in Souderton 8a-4p Mon-Fri, we have to make a jam happen! I'd live to hear those amps, and check out that Rist Tele!

Ah, yeah, that's got the Ark Amps look to it. Cool cab, but I've got an unnatural affection for good looking wood.

Speaking of, who did that original Winona cab? You know, the Boysden, or whatever his name is. It's finished wood, with metal grill ports on the top, and rounded corners. That you or Matt?

Re: Phaez Daisycutter DC10 kit build

Update:
I had much more success with the DC10 tonight. I don't know what changed. I had it back on the bench to replace the LED dropping resistor, and when I connected it to the speaker and plugged in, my impression was totally different. Great low-gain tone with the gain and MV each at 9 o'clock. Well I call that low gain. The overdrive sounded good too with the gain around noon. Maybe it took some time for the caps to "break in" or something. Dunno.

Some more photos below. Notice the chrome input jack. Please don't make fun of my poor grill cloth job. That will be replaced

re: Phaez Amps [merged]

Also, y'all East Coasters kill me. I was born and raised in Baltimore, but I've been out west for six years now. Don't tell anyone I said so, but the music scene in NoCal kinda sucks. It's so much better back east. I miss that.

If we did a MLP meet out here, like three people would come, and at least one of them would be more interested in the cabs than the amps. We'd probably have to have cheap California wine instead of beer, or if we did have beer, it'd be Miller High Life, instead one of the myriad of cheap drinkable beers one finds on the Atlantic. Food would be better though. I know, 'cause I'd cook it... Maybe spit roast a pig or something. But aint gonna happen, 'cause aint no one who really cares out here.

Alright. I'm gonna go cry in the corner for a while.

This too has always been my favorite Phaez logo but I am thinking it would be hard to do a nameplate for a traditional head cab with that logo. It is by far my favorite though.

Matt made that cab ...it was unfinished and needed some touch up on the ash ....I stained it walnut and did a gloss lacquer finish on it ....it turned out quite nice... Matt dosen't do high gloss finish ,just toung oil....It would be possible to do that logo ,but the program doesn't have that script...not sure how Randy could do program .... Those wood cabs by Matt were payments for amps Randy made for ARK.......JIM
