The most underappreciated rock/metal guitarists

There are excellent hard rock guitarists out there that IMO haven't gotten their kudos eventhough, IMO, they have reached guitar hero status. The bands that they're in are big but they themselves have not really been recognized for thier own individual achievements...in other words, you've never really seen them on the covers of magazines like Zakk, Vai, etc...

Just wondering what others think. Here are a few that first come to mind for me. Both players IMO are very dynamic and melodic players that can compose some exciting solos.

Joey Allen from Warrant
Glenn Tipton from Judas Priest
Michael Schenker from UFO, MSG

Re: The most underappreciated rock/metal guitarists

I personally would not consider Vito or Warren unappreciated, they are just out of the spotlight now a days. Back in the day they were TOPS in there class. I believe Vito was the youngest to ever GRACE the cover of GUITAR MAGAZINE.

I would not say that Glen Tipton is underrated. Both he and KK Downing are legends in the greatest metal band of all time.

Actually come to think of it, I fall into that category. I play hard rock/metal and nobody appreciates!

Is Izzy's stuff self titled? I never knew he had a solo career and would love to hear it!

Definitely Michael Romeo from Symphony X - that whole band should get more recognition. Also, Jeff Loomis from Nevermore. Loomis is fantastic!

I think Izzy's just underrated to your everyday casual GnR listener.

Serious guitarists/rock fans know that Stradlin' was the backbone of that band, musically and politically. He so well combined the talents of all the members while integrating his own. MVP!

Re: The most underappreciated rock/metal guitarists

I'm not so sure about under-appreciated, but I'd like to see Dave Navarro putting himself out there more (musically, anyway). Maybe some solo stuff and guest spots on other peoples CD's.

Is he a "great" guitarist...probably not, but certainly capable and he's compelling to watch. I like Dave.

He is not underated by you and me and IMO he is a legend, but the media and the Rock and Roll scene at large have not given him enough attention for his talent (look at Zakk W., Lynch, Slash, or Dime who have gotten a lot of kudos). From my recollection from the late 70s and early to late 80s, he nor kk received as much attention as guitar heros as they should have (for example he has not been on the covers of many magazines and really few interviews and Endorsement/Signature products). The band generated a big buzz and they sold out many a show, but Glenn as an individual talent, IMO has not been fully recognized.

Maybe if he was the sole guitar player in the band, he would of recevied more acclaim.

Re: The most underappreciated rock/metal guitarists

The one thing I can say about KK Downing and Glen Tipton is that they continued to grow as guitarists even after the became very successful. Listen to some of their playing on early 80's albums like Screaming for Vengeance or British Steel and then compare that to some of their early 90's material like Pain Killer. What an incredible leap in ability. I admire them for being able to continue to grow, while they were releasing albums and touring the world. You don't see that often.

Re: The most underappreciated rock/metal guitarists

BUCKETHEAD...some of you will know who he is, others wont.
As crazy and mentally disturbed (or just goos at acting) as the guy is, he is probably the best and most versatile guitarist alive...big call, i know.

Buckethead recently had his time in the new (and i might add terrible) Guns 'n' Roses, aside from that hes made 30 solo albums and appeared on over 50. (Axl is even keeping the content he recorded for 'Chinese Democracy' despite him having left the band.)

He does have a fair amount of recognition, but i must say not nearly enough for what he does. The man is a musical genious, and not nearly enough people know it.

Let me clarify that YES:
- I do realise he wars a KFC bucket and a mask on his head.
- I do realise he dosnt speck directly to or look directly at cameras.
- I have seen photos of him without his mask and YES he does look normal.
- He probably is mentally disturbed in one way or another.
- I realise that he's is not an alien nor was he attacked and mutilated by chickens...and i do dnderstand he tends to think he is/was.
BUT HES ONE OF THE BEST GUITARISTS ALIVE!...he may not have the look and stlye of guys like Clapton, Slash and Rhoads, but god he can play ANYTHING! - And hes unique.
(Sorry, i had to add that...last time i tried to mention buckethead i got flamed koz he is such a nutcase, which i understand, but still that dosnt make him any less of a great musician and guitarist.)

Check out some of his stuff on youtube:
YouTube - Guns N' Roses Buckethead solo
YouTube - Buckethead Lesson (Edited Version)
YouTube - Buckethead Jam Session

Anyone agree/disagree? Why?

Re: The most underappreciated rock/metal guitarists

I don't follow too much new stuff but a couple old guys who never quite got their due were Mick Ronson of Mott The Hoople/David Bowie and Rick Derringer who was the guitar player on Edgar Winters Frankenstein.
