Tips on getting Jimmy Page Tone?

Hey all, I was wondering if anybody has any relatively cheap ways to get Jimmy Page's live tone from around 1972(listen to how the west was won for reference.) I currently own an epi les paul ultra, through a crybaby set to page's specs, then through various pedals and such into an old crate amp from the 80's. I'm a little low on the amp department, but i'm thinking of buyin an old marshall JCM 900. If anyone could tell me their ideas, much thanks.

Re: Tips on getting Jimmy Page Tone?

Welcome Jimmy. You've got one of the guitars. (You'll need a Telecaster too) Empty the room of the rest of that stuff and get yourself a Marshall and Supro amp and you're well on your way. Of course you'll need to be a studio engineer with all kinds of tricks up your sleeves and it wouldn't hurt to have had 10 years worth of session work under your belt.

Re: Tips on getting Jimmy Page Tone?

Welcome, man. I think a Marshall would be a step in the right direction.

As far as the 'Jimmy Page wiring', this might help you. Everything you need is in the diagram and I think the thread is also informative.
(It works with any 4-conductor pickups, not only Seymore Duncans)

Why not get your own tone and not be a copy of someone else?

A Line 6 POD loaded with Lincoln Brewster's Variac'd Plexi models, coupled with proper technique, does a great job.

I believe the tone he's seeking pre-dates the push/pull stuff.

Lighter strings really do help, more so to me than many electronic components in the mix. I use light tops w/regular or heavy bottoms.

Re: Tips on getting Jimmy Page Tone?

the quacky page sound apparently comes from using a '60s or later 'T-top' humbucker in the bridge rather than having the pickups wired out of phase, so look that way as well

If the OP bothered to use search... I am sure he could find at least half a dozen or even maybe 328 threads with all the ad nauseam information he needs and I don't need to GTFO anything sonny.

Re: Tips on getting Jimmy Page Tone?

You can actually get a pretty decent Page tone with a JCM 900, start with this and tweak it to your liking: Presence: 7; Bass: 7; Middle: 6; Treble: 5; Master: 3; Gain: 14; Pre-amp: 3

Of course you also need the #1 or #2 and some magic fingers, but you already knew that...

Re: Tips on getting Jimmy Page Tone?

Good Gawd there's about as many questions as there are answers to this. I guess if I was looking for more of a vintage tone...(or as close as I could get to Jimmy Page on the Cheap)

I'd maybe, maybe put that gain level up to about 5 and just leave it there. As far as the amps go, spread the sound out and put the main amp on a stand. For crunchiness, lose the effects and roll back the volume for rhythms.

But even that's a crap shoot...there's also miles of difference between live Jimmy Page and Jimmy Page in the recording studio.

Methinks the big trick to it is even beyond the amplifier and looking at what Page did live...I know for a fact there was a lot less reliance on effects vs. utilizing the tone and volume knobs...and the crunch factor wasn't near as high...
