Do new LPs age"Fade" the same as the 50s LPs did?

In my travels through the endless threads I've read many different opinions on this subject. ( Do todays Historic's fade in the same manner as the LPs of the 50s) Here's my conclusion, This is a 2013 with a stock factory finish that has been sun faded, I would not suggest sun fading ones guitar unless your a professional, There are many variable's that one may not be aware of until after the fact as I found out first hand,

All photos are the same guitar.

Above picture factory new / Below sun Faded same guitar.

That is your 2013 20th Anniversary Murphyburst R9...i wonder if Tom Murphy used some old methods? It did state in the 20th Anniversary R9 sales blurb that old methods had been revisited...

@jerry47: pop your poker chip off, & let's see what's under there. That'll definitely give you/us a clear look at the fading...

You can see the original red under the pickguard area.

Re: Do new LPs age"Fade" the same as the 50s LPs did?

I've seen several 2013's and 2014's posted on different sites that have shown a decent amount of fading due to sun contact.

Some think they won't fade much and others do. From what I have seen they will fade. Not sure if it's as much or easy as the Originals though.

That sure is a beauty, has the back also faded ? The sides definitely appeared to have faded a lot

Re: Do new LPs age"Fade" the same as the 50s LPs did?

Not the same a the 50's Models . The newer LP's get burnt out color and not a real fade and the lacquer(Nitro) isn't faded and won't . Yes the back and the sides should fade very similar , Both old and new use/used aniline .red dye(on the back), which is/was not color fast .

Nice looking guitar either way . I'm digging the figure on that 1

Cool! Love the top fading, but the sides look a bit too brown for my taste, even though I suppose it would be authentic.

That's what I was talking about in my original statement " Post", About not knowing what you'll end up with till its over, I would have liked to have
had more red on the side's / Back and less brown rust, But by the time I noticed it was to late.

Yeah I kinda figured

Still very cool though and all in all better than the original finish imo.

That looks killer. I've been sunbathing my 2013 Iced Tea R8. Only got about 10 hours on it so far...probably need a few hundred.

I was am concerned about the red fading too fast. I think I'll tape it up and let it hand for a while...I do cover the fingerboard.

Gorgeous color on that one.

I think the faded color looks great. But it looks as if the board has also faded considerably. Is that correct or just due to the lighting in that pic?

Cool. So what were the unexpected problems you ran into?

I've sunbathed my '13 R8 for about 20 hours total over the last couple of years ALWAYS making sure the board is covered with thick cloth.
